History and Nature
To live with fear and not be afraid is the final test of maturity.
-Edward Weeks
(Note: Morael, like many Kyriotates, assumes no gender to its name. However,
for the purpose and readability of this brief chronicle, the Angel of Fear
is referred to here in the masculine. --Amisiel, 5th Scribe of Destiny
[Elohite])
Morael was a servitor of Beleth long before the Rebellion came. Before
Lucifer was planting seeds of doubt into the minds of angel and Archangel
alike, the Dominator was aiding humans on earth while his mistress was in
the Marches. Fear has a purpose. Without fear, there is no sense of danger.
Morael helped guide the instincts of early man, instilling the proper amount
of fear and respect for danger and teaching them to fear God.
The Rebellion shocked and scared the young angel. He fought against friend
and Superior, watching some die and others Fall. Disillusioned by the event,
the Dominator fled to the corporeal realm. Alone. Most of the few remaining
angels of Fear turned to Uriel or Blandine. Morael was without Superior and,
for a long time, without guidance. He continued doing what he saw as his
duty, but without any real feeling.
Then, realization hit. If Heaven had feared Rebellion, it would have
protected itself against it. He saw that Dominic's continued actions (and
the three angels of Judgement who kept a careful eye on the Kyriotate) were
now borne in fear and how important fear truly was. His faith in himself and
in the Word he served was renewed. Through that, his faith in Heaven and God
grew back and Morael began interacting with humanity with a vigor he never
had before.
As he swam through the currents of human minds he saw that the Word he
served could easily turn to what Beleth now desired. There were many
negative aspects to the Word. But, as he saw with Fire, many Words had their
flip-sides. Morael took special, fearful, care not to let his influence
corrupt, but rather strengthen humanity. He helped instill fear, but tried
never to turn that to paranoia, loathing, or terror.
In 2000 B.C., the Kyriotate made his first return to Heaven since the Fall,
having spent some 20,000 years not only on the corporeal realm, but also
without Superior. To the surprise of a great deal of the Host, Morael
requested servitude under the Archangel of Stone. He saw David's motives as
the most similar to his own. Both using adversity to raise humanity and, in
many cases, bring them together. Morael realized the adage of "safety in
numbers." It was his own scars, earned mentally and celestially over the
years, that brought him back Home.
Morael worked hard under his new Superior, still using fear as his strongest
tool. Often, he took the role of Pharisee, teacher or other religious figure
to bring people together, instilling a fear of God into them. Dominic, David
and many among the Seraphim Council took note of Morael's continued
assistance towards the Host and he was granted the word he once served
under. Morael became the Angel of Fear.
The consensus amongst the Council was not unanimous, however. Uriel was wary
of a Word which had once failed and Fallen being granted again and Blandine
was unsure that she could ever work with Fear again, in the Archangel's mind
it had become a detriment to Dreams. Still, the majority felt that not only
was the Kyriotate worthy of becoming bound to such a powerful Word, but it
would also be a psychological blow against Hell.
It was.
When Beleth received news of her previous Word being awarded to another,
acrimonious Princess settled into an even darker mood.
Morael began dividing his time between the Heaven and Earth, leaving the
Marches and the dreams of mankind to Blandine. It was no secret that a fear
of his former superior also kept him out of harm's way. The Dominator
continued using priests and clergymen as his primary hosts. Morael brings
fear, but the kind people live, even survive, with. Not the fear that
destroys, but the fear that tempers and strengthens, and just keeps people
alive.
The Angel of Fear often appears in his celestial form, rather than
manifesting in a preferred demeanor. If physical form is required, the angel
often uses the resonance granted him by the Archangel of Stone and makes his
appearance as a stone gargoyle.
Dissonance
If you fear nothing, you love nothing. If you love nothing, what joy can
there be in life?
-Unknown
It is dissonant for Morael or any angel serving him to breed terror or
paranoia in another. Angels who serve Fear often walk a fine line with the
Word they work under. They may use fear to bring people together, to warn of
danger, or to teach others to live with their fears, but they may not cause
undo dread. Morael and his angels may, however, put the fear of God into a
demon without repercussion.
Attunements
Let the fear of danger be a spur to prevent it; he that fears not, gives
advantage to the danger.
-Francis Quarles
Kyriotate of Fear (restricted): Unlike most Dominators, Morael and the Kyriotates that serve under him can
choose not to push their host's minds into the Marches. Instead, on the
Kyriotate's desire, the host may retain a somewhat blurry memory of the
actions his body performed. At any moment the Kyriotate can block the host's
mind, sending them to a dream-state, but the consciousness will not return
until the Kyriotate then leaves the body. Many Dominators use this to help
instill proper fear or help their host temper their fears.
Analysis: At a touch (or via possession) the angel knows the fears the target carries
with them and how strongly those fears affect their lives. Conversely, these
angels also know what the target doesn't fear and how strong those feelings
are.
Know Thine Enemy: Morael is familiar with his former Archangel and what she has become. He
sees how easy it could be for some to sway to Beleth's way of thinking. At a
glance, an angel with this attunement knows if a person directly serves
Nightmares. i.e., the angel would know a demon of Nightmares or a Hellsworn
under Nightmares on sight, but not someone influenced by them.
Rites
Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.
