++++++++++++++++++++GEV List Thingy, Oct 2nd++++++++++++++++++++ [This list has been dead for ages, so let me give it one last try before rolling it up. Mr Jackson is now on the list. (Well Cole's on the SFB list and that seemed to help a bit.) So let me take up a subject that he was "thinking about", last time it came up: Infantry Defence. My view is that most of the "defence strength" of an infantry unit comes from "collaborative jamming" and their thin suits mostly just keep out diffuse blast effects. (diffuse NUCLEAR blast effects that is...) In this light the stacked defence of platoons makes sense, as the network can only extend so far and the extended area of the "region of uncertainty" makes up for putting more bodies at risk. So I would like to see the rather overpriced and wimpy marines replaced by ranger units that depend on stealth for defence (so that their defence does not "stack"), have a little bit more speed and get to deploy entirely hidden. The fear of having your OGRE stumble into an overrun is a very good reason to cover it with AP guns. (Think of it as "limpet protection" ;-) -HJC] Henry J.
