============ OGRE/GEV list, November 17th (Last: November 9th) ============= ===== Sequence Question From: peletier@grolen.com ===== The Assault Tank From: Christopher Camfield ===== lowering the cost From: Forrest Aguirre ===== Missile Tank ammo From: Garrett Briggs <71514.2661@CompuServe.COM> ===== Buy the Book. From: sj@io.com (Steve Jackson) ------------------------------ From: peletier@grolen.com Subject: Sequence Question Can units wait and see the outcome of combat with other units before they move and attack? IE: can I move a single unit and attack, and then based on that outcome, move other units and attack: or do you have to move all your units first, then attack? ----- [For Overruns yes, for regular fire no. (The movement phase is OVER before the first ranged attack is made) -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Christopher Camfield Subject: The Assault Tank I don't think that the APGEV sounds like the greatest idea, because you're trying to combine heavy firepower to take out infantry - which are typically in entrenched positions - with unnecessary high speeds. How about something like... Assault Tank (moves like a heavy) D2 M2 6/2 According to the original AU formula, that's 32.5 points, or 1 Armor Unit. (For you Minis fans, that's a range of 4" and movement of 4") I'm not used to the idea of putting AP guns on tanks. I suspect that the SHVY in the Minis book got them because the original SHVY was slightly understrength for a 2 AU vehicle. I expect the above unit would be more useful with AP guns instead of regular firepower, though, because presumably they can be fired at independent targets in an overrun. Heck, why not just use regular SHVY's? They've got lovely defence, good medium-range firepower, and two AP guns as well in case the infantry try to overrun. I agree generally with the old article on Defence in GEV that says that using GEVs on defense is a bad idea. Speaking of which, since it's in the Ogre Book, I'd mention that I've seen a Web page of someone selling old gaming material, in unused condition, including Battlesuit, The Ogre Book, and Shockwave! If people are interested, I'll look for it again; I'm not associated with the individual, but like to pass along mention of interesting stuff I've seen out there... "I keep tellin' myself 'just keep shaking my head' / Cause the Crow and the Jackal and the Jackfish won't start eating till they're sure that I'm dead" ----- [Most Infantry support tanks were VERY well armored. How well this would work against nukes is anybody's guess. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Forrest Aguirre Subject: lowering the cost Memoranda From: CEO, M.A.D. military technology designs To: Sales section, M.A.D.M.T.D Re: APGEV Looks like the APGEV is obsolete for use in modern combat arenas. Recommend lowering cost to 3 points (down from 6) and selling our surplus to underdeveloped nations for use against militia. Signed: Colonel Joe Grunt ------------------------------ From: Garrett Briggs <71514.2661@CompuServe.COM> Subject: Missile Tank ammo Henry, This may have been asked before, but how many missiles does a missile tank hold if a missile tank could hold missiles? Is it unlimited for gaming purposes - like heavy tank ammo? Garrett ----- [Besides the "Heavy Missile Tank" and the "Missile Crawler", all "standard" units have unlimited ammo. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: sj@io.com (Steve Jackson) Subject: Buy the Book. [Uh, Steve? In your book, Ogre Minis, page 15: "The missiles it fires are essentially identical to those launched by the Missile Tank..." -HJC] !!!!! Literally in my book. Hoist by my own words. Okay: (a) clearly I didn't remember saying that, and (b) I'm not sure I believe it now. I'd welcome comments. Fnord. ----- [The primary way of distinguishing the types of missions the heavy guns can handle has been the width of their barrels. With a wider mussel, you can fit in a greater variety of junk, say missile dropped torpedoes, or scatterable mines. -HJC] Henry J.
