============ OGRE/GEV list, Dec 5th (Last: Dec 2nd) ============= ===== Experienced Units From: "Said, Stephen" ===== Splitfire From: Steve Jackson ------------------------------ From: "Said, Stephen" Subject: Experienced Units The feed back has been great. The argument concerning the flow of the game is crucial and I heartily agree with Andrew Walters comments. To give a little perspective, I have been hacking away at campaign rules for the last year. I have completed the first draft. Rather than attempting to write Tables of Organisation for the different levels (IE: Brigade, Regiment, Battalion etc) I came up with a generic grouping of units that I term the Taskforce. The taskforce is simply two or more units. To keep the game play moving as swiftly as possible the taskforce is treated as one whole unit. This is pretty simplistic I know but consider the following two key points in me developing the taskforce (i) GAMEPLAY, if anything I try to add to the OGRE rules bogs the players down in record keeping, forget it! and (ii) Looking at the era that this game is set in, it would be highly likely that units of this type would form. Consider a mercenary TF for a moment. They would have a rag tag collection of whatever units they could scavenge from their previous campaigns. One would assume that the troops would be skilled in fighting from whatever platforms were part of the TF. Therefore their 'experience' would leaven the entire TF. Now, back to the original question of experience, I envisioned applying the experience classification to the entire TF. So whether the individual unit was a squad of infantry, a GEV or a Hvy Tank, all units attached to the TF would benefit from the experience level. I like the idea of the multiple tables and will probably incorporate them into the campaign rules I have been developing. I would also need to develop some type of formula concerning new recruits, IE: if 30% more units are added to the TF, their experience rating is downgraded etc. Also, how does one's experience rating increase? Re splitfire: It changes the game (either hexes or miniatures) in very interesting ways if you just say you can pick any one point along your path, including your starting point, to fire from. Specifically, it allows a fighting retreat, which is, quite deliberately, not an effective tactic in OGRE unless your range is far greater than your movement; right now, only MHWZ fleeing from slow foes have any pretense at a fighting retreat. (Of course, if you can fire different weapons from *different points* along the path, then you have splitfire.)
