============ OGREverse list, Dec 29th (Last: Dec 27th) ============= ===== HIFV From: Thomas_Jones-Low@idx.com ===== Cost of the superheavy From: Thomas_Jones-Low@idx.com ===== OGREverse Errata From: "Garth L. Getgen" ------------------------------ From: Thomas_Jones-Low@idx.com Subject: HIFV Can the Hover Infantry Fighting vehicle (HIFV) carry normal squads of infantry (not just your favorite militia)? How about Heavy Weapon squads? Thomas Jones-Low joneslowt@idx.com ----- [In order to simplify things, why don't I make the following tables out of thin air... Type Space Factor Militia squad 2 Infantry squad 3 Unit On top capacity Cargo Space Lt Tnk 3 -- Hvy Tnk 3 -- Superhvy 6 -- GEV-PC 9 -- Truck -- 4 HoverTruck -- 6 APC 6* -- HIFV 3* 3 *- Protected space that allows fire. Units partially in Cargo are not allowed to fire. My suggestion is that Heavy Weapon Squads and Heavy Tanks be moved up to four to eliminate the "French Light Missile Tank" of one heavy weapons team mounted on top of a light tank. (Each additional round of ammo would take one space and cost one VP) -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Thomas_Jones-Low@idx.com Subject: Cost of the superheavy Oh, I agree the superheavy cost may be out of wack with the subjective play testing cost. Steve Jackson posted two possible changes to the Superheavy to make it worth closer to its calculated cost. (see gevjul22.txt in the archive). 1) Make the Superheavy a D5 unit. 2) Add a record sheet to each Superheavy, and on a X (but not XX) result mark off one gun, it's mobility, or an outright kill. Personally I like option 1. The D5 superheavy becomes immune to attacks by single light tanks, LGEVs, GEVs, lasers, Etc. It becomes king of the battlefield... until a number of units gang up on it to kill it. The same tactic used to destroy howitzers. I don't like option 2 because it add a new form of record keeping for units which is different from Ogres. What really needs to be in the next release of the rules is the units for the Crewed Ogres. Instead of the cybernetic brain, the Ogre carries a crew of 4 (or more). In the OGREverse timeline, the Chinese built these units (finding people cheaper than hardware). The real difficulty with the Superheavy is it sits on the line between "normal" units and the Ogres. Making the Superheavy a nearly unkillable single unit fits well. And I would vote for "OGREverse" as a good name, but it seems to already have been adopted. Thomas Jones-Low joneslowt@idx.com ------------------------------ From: "Garth L. Getgen" Subject: OGREverse Errata Ah, good. In the old SHOCKWAVE add-on, the GEV-PC was only a 3 point unit. In the miniatures rules, in one place it said 3 and in another it said 6 .... when I asked about that, I was told that it should be 3. I argued, using the old formula from SPACE GAMER (which you wrote, I believe), that it should be 4 or 4-1/2. I'm not sure it's truly worth 6 points in and of itself, but since it can carry Infantry I can buy it. Thanks for the URL. Garth L. Getgen ----- [It's been linked from my page all this time...
