(For the price of three missile > tanks, you get the one time strike of three missile tanks, with a > one-hex bonus) -HJC] I guess I should have added an additional requirement: The unit should be capable of a relatively good turn of speed. That cuts out the MHWZ, which is also, of course, expensive. I don't fancy the idea of only getting one long-range shot off with HW infantry, but a few GEV-PCs (or even trucks or hovertrucks!) could really beef up defence against raids or breakthroughs by giving the MI some faster transport from one side of the map to the other. My general defensive philosopy (if I can actually talk about such a thing) is based on the article in the Ogre book - let the enemy come to you, and don't buy GEVs. Admittedly, the Fast Missile Tank is getting close to a GEV, but it doesn't have a second movement phase, and it does have a longer range and the ability to drive through forests. In the Breakthrough game that recently ended, I didn't start my initial forces anywhere near where they would end up, because I wanted something of a mobile defence. I should perhaps have been a bit wiser about how much I responded to the attacker's movements (I ended up off-balance when he charged west, but I think the idea is still useful. None of these units (except the MHWZ) would have been available to me since we were playing basic GEV. Might be fun to play a PBeM game with custom units... anyone interested? Chris PS Minor question about "covering"... if you're playing face-to-face, with covered counters, your opponent will be able to judge how big a stack is, even if not what's in it. What about in PBeM? ----- [Fine with me, I get those third-of-a-point-each-monster-militias and you get all the other strange units from Minis. (Hint: I skirmish the LGEVs back and forth across the "line of death") Personally: I put militia in GEV like this: attack:1/1, move one-half, defense one-half, cost one-third-of-a-point. They'd come in only one point counters (You can stack upto fifteen of these in one hex, but they gain no defensive bonus from clumping up, and are eliminated by the "D"s from spilover fire) The counter has two sides to it, standing and running. Each turn the movement for this unit is: A standing unit can remaining standing, or flip over to running (in the same hex). A running unit must flip back over to standing, but can move to an adjacent hex at the same time. (Except that they can't enter water hexes). Otherwise they act like infantry. (Including the doubled attack in overruns. Hint to OGREs: do NOT overrun these turkeys!) -HJC] ------------------------------ From: SFsupply@aol.com Subject: OGRE MINIATURES >courtesy of Ral Partha... Mark, There is never anything wrong with mentioning an idea you have. Never let fear of "I'll bet someone else has already said it" stop you from posting whenever inspiration strikes. Of such things are great ideas born. And if someone else DID think of (and post) it first, -well, great minds think alike, right? Besides, your mentioning of which minis from the RP BattleTech would work well for certain units is indeed a help to those who may be thinking along the same lines. Here are some more recommendations for those of you who want to go 3-D: Ogre Mini BattleTech Equiv. HVY Tank Vedette Medium Tank MSL Tank SRM or LRM Carrier GEV Pegasus Hovertank LtGEV Savannah Master Hovercraft LT Hmm, tough one. Maybe a Scorpion Tank HWZ Any number of "Emplaced Gun" models from many manufacturers. MHWZ Long Tom or Burke artillery pieces SHVY Demolisher Tank There are any number of metal/plastic/resin manufacture minis and scenery components (Ground Zero Games comes to mind) available to flesh out details such as Militia, Command Posts, structures with SP (Structure Points), etc. etc. Best, flunky ------------------------------ From: "Stephen A. Anyone got any old copies of orgre and/or gev (especially gev with the missile counters, trains, gev-ps's and hover trucks) that they want to sell? regards, stephen ------------------------------ Henry J.
