They don't seem to be in your directory on io.com... -- fish. ----- [Sorry, I was indeposed. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: andrew.flowers@gs.com (Andrew Flowers (INTERN)) Subject: Any and all new/variant units wanted Henry and list, I think I'd like to create an archive of new and variant units for Ogre, an idea which has been often proposed but never realized (as far as I know). I've asked this before, but response was sort of minimal, so I'll try again: Anyone got any new units? I'm going through the archives (slowly, there's a lot of them) and gleaning what I can from there (like Garth's VTOL units from back in April), but if anyone has any designs they haven't posted to the list, please please please do send them to me (at awflower@midway.uchicago.edu, please). Actually, even if you *have* posted new units to the list, if you've got them lying around in a handy format (like a text file) if you could just send that to me as well, that'd make my life easier. Whatever I get I'll post directly to the Ogre website (http://www.sjgames.com/ogre/), probably under the Articles subdirectory. Attribution will be given, of course, so if you want to see your name in "print" gimme what you got. -- Fish Flowers, Ogre website peon. ------------------------------ From: Sethkimmel@aol.com Subject: Superheavy damage Steve, How about only a defence of four? There is more of a precedence for this than a defence of five (Ogre components), and I remember your article in the Space Gamer answering Mr. Cobb's MacIntosh spreadsheet of Gev vehicle designs (#74). You stated some very definate ideas on maximums for speed, armor thickness, and weapons range. You said a D5 was a "maybe". I think a four would be more reasonable then. BTW: I have a thought on all of these air unit designs floating out there. I know you hate them, and think they will die quickly in the game, but there seems to be interest out there, so here is an idea that might work as a compromise-see what you think. I) treat an airplane as a speed 40 (600 MPH) CRUISE MISSILE. (ie. it can be shot down just like a cruise missile by anyone). a) instead of exploding like a cruise missile, it has a one shot 4/3 missile attack, and a permanent 2/2 (or 1/2 ,whichever you think more appropriate) strafing gun. 1) the owning player fires the plane's weapons during the aircraft's movement. As per Shockwave 4.04, the defender can fire first before the plane can fire it's weapons. a) as a plane is offboard, use the +3 offboard modifer. b)cost: at Least three armor units (maybe four?) b)how about an unarmed speed 30 (450 MPH) troop transport? It can drop 3 squads of infantry anywhere along it's flight path. II) Helicopters: As these are really AFV's that can fly with rotors, treat them as such. a) Attack Bird : GEV equiv. (2/2 attack D1 m 5/5 (150 MPH),cost 2 armor units (maybe three if you want them very expensive and tempermental, but my personal observation is that rotors are no more so than a GEV plenum chamber). 1) As these are fragile weapons, D results are kills too, whether on the ground or in the air. a) these units are very vunerable to cruise missiles. In the boardgame they take damage on the worst line (towns and forest line). In miniatures play they are automatically DESTROYED out to full length of the missile template (7"). (When using Goliath, these vehicles are also attacked on the farthest line). b)Transport: GEV-PC equiv. (1/2 attack D1 m 4/4 120 MPH), cost 2 (or 3 ?) armor units. Can lift 3 squads of infantry or one LGEV or Light Tank. 1)It takes one full turn to load/unload infantry, two turns to load/unload AFV's. Vehicles and infantry die with their carrier. Notes: I tried to keep to two themes in this rule set: 1) Make copters and aircraft as vunerable as I could. 2) make them mesh into the existing rules as simply as possible (I'm a great believer in KISS (keep it simple stupid). I feel that this is the easiest way to do this, but perhaps like you said the Ogre world is 2 dimensional. Steve, BTW I agree with you about the Ogre world not being safe for aircraft. Adding them to the game would probably be an uneeded complication, but there are a few senario's that would need them (amphibious operations, swamp operations, mountain operations, any other areas that are not AFV friendly). I would also think that aircraft and copters have one other advantage over AFV's-range. They could go on long distance raids more effieciently than GEV's (until they run in to laser towers that is..), however I don't think that this is what Ogre GEV is trying to game. I do admit that I personally think aircraft and copters are fun to add to the game (if only to shoot them down). As to your question about superheavy rules varients, I think I saw them on the GCS forum, or the Wargamers forum (I don't remember the acronym) on AOL (keyword STRATEGY). Seth C. Kimmel sethkimmel@aol.com ----- [There already is a unit with a basic defense of 5 (7 if inside a revetment, more with terrain or LOS blocked), but it isn't mobile. -HJC] ------------------------------ From: Sethkimmel@aol.com Subject: Fencer scenario Steve I like this Fencer scenario. I have a question. Do you use the miniatures Fencer with two secondary batteries, or the Ogre Reinforcement Pack Fencer with four secondaries? Seth C.
