Back in the old days when I used to build WWII tank models, I used, two good schemes for dust/mud, depending on the scale of the model. 1) Large scale models looked good with a spatter effect of light brown paint with a little sand mixed in. Get a stiff fan shaped brush (oil/arcylic canvas painters know this brush) and dip the tips in the mixture. Then using a toothpick, run the toothpick along the bristles, lenghtwise, aiming at the model/mini. With a little practise the aim is good and you get globs of paint/sand thrown onto the treads and sides of the model. Looks pretty damned good. 2) Smaller scale I used to use powered tempra paint of the right mud color light brown/dark brown/grey. This is harder, but while the model is still wet, dip a regular small sized paintbrush into the power and flick the bristles with your finders or a toothpick. Again with practise this can look pretty good, and the tempra paints won't mix with the oil based models paints well, so they retain the "dusty" effect. (Japan in this century and plenty of other historical examples.) We didn't say it was easy, and perhaps the mainland WAS in conflict... there are many stories to be told about that theater. (France and Russia against the USA and UK? Unthinkable!) Also, giant tanks might not be such a bad idea on the nuclear battlefield. They'd be less likely to get blown over. -HJC] Henry J.
