============ OGREverse list, Jan 14th (Last: Jan 11th) ============= ===== Yet Another Ogre Construction Formula From: "Garth L. Getgen" From: Thomas_Jones-Low@idx.com ===== Minis Envy From: Alan E & Carmel J Brain ===== Caught on the jump From: Chris Camfield ------------------------------ From: "Garth L. Getgen" Subject: Yet Another Ogre Construction Formula A couple things here: First, your format got munged somehow ... the indents didn't carry over to the second line too well. Secondly, I believe you may have "borrowed" ideas from Henry's archives and perhaps due credit should be given. Either that or it's a case of GMTA (Great Minds Think Alike) and you have a great mind, too. See, I "invented" the OLCM and Little Boy (and Fat Man) OGRE ... though I think your Little Boy is more like my Fat Man design. Of course, I allowed for both internal AND external OLCMs. Henry "invented" the OGRE Laser and the Missile Tank Missile Launcher, if I remember right. Third, the Self Destruct "warhead" is NOT an option, nor is it a "warhead", but is a standard feature of the OGRE's power reactor. Zero cost. But you are correct in that the original self-destruct rules from GEV don't fit well to the SHOCKWAVE rules for Cruise Missiles. That being said, I do like the way you consolidated everything. It's a project I've been meaning to do myself. Thanks for posting it. Garth L. Getgen ----- [You claim too much credit for me. I did not invent missile tank missiles for OGREs. -HJC] ----- From: Thomas_Jones-Low@idx.com Subject: Yet Another Ogre Construction Formula Secondly, I borrowed the ideas from you and Henry and the rest of the mailing list. I meant to include a set of designers notes but I live in Burlington, Vermont, and the power was flucuating and I hit send, not save on the e-mail, and then the power went dark until Monday. I will post the Designers notes (with proper credits) in a couple of days. Firstly, Sorry about the format, I tried to cut the lines at 80 characters, next time I'll cut them at 75. Lastly, Your welcome, I glad you like the posting. In a desperate attempt to prove that I have no life, I have collected most of the optional and unoffical OGREverse rules and senarios I have ever seen or thought of into a similar format. I may end up posting some of the new ones depending upon the reaction to these. Mile-long jumps through the >>air? As one Combine Heavy Tank commander to another: >--snip-- >>I think an infantryman in a jump that long would be a sitting duck. >>Survivability nil. > > > >Personally, I don't think it was meant as "one long jump" - instead, it's >actually many smaller jumps, represented as one long jump in Ogre. > >I saw it like the MI in the *book* _Starship Troopers_ - jump a little, >fire your nuke, jump a little, avoid the Skinnies militia, jump some more. But, if I remember correctly (and unfortunately, I just deleted the email in my Trash folder, or I could have referred to the original message) I was commenting on infantry with the ability to jump 3 hexes once, or something like that. I also see the MI as being like those in Starship Troopers. Come to think of it, Winch Chung(?)'s picture of an MI trooper in the GEV rulebook, firing a shoulder-mounted rocket or missile launcher, seems to capture the MI in my mind better than the MI in _Battlesuit_. There aren't nearly enough heavy weapons in _Battlesuit_ for the infantry to be effective at long distances! In Starship Troopers, the troopers make a point of not jumping so high or long that they would be sitting ducks. I really like the idea mentioned here awhile ago of ranger infantry (or whatever they were called) which fight as normal but have M3. Nasty... Regarding Thomas Jones-Low's construction formula: Does it produce the same results as the AUs quoted for the normal Ogres? I find it difficult to believe that a movement rating of 4 increases an Ogre's effectiveness or cost by only 5%. Stealth units (and the Ninja) were introduced in issue 52, was it, of the Space Gamer? It seems like that was a really Ogre/GEV-geared issue, with several related articles, but I don't remember ever seeing a copy. :-( Worth tracking down?
