SJ Games Daily Illuminator ( http://www.sjgames.com/ill/ ) April 24, 2001: Wounds Unlimited -- R.I.P. -------------------------------------------------------------- The online game magazine Wounds Unlimited has ceased operation. The website will stay up, at least for a while. Those of you interested in the Ogre scenario design contest recently run on WU need not worry. The contest ended several days ago, we have all the entries, and judging continues. -- Scott Haring ============================== From: Sumnerd1234@cs.com Subject: Scenarios, maps, and other stuff. I posted this question on the Ogre message board, and I figured I'd post it here also. Has anyone thought about using the maps from Dwarfstar's Grav Armor (I finally got a copy, and for only $6) for a Ogre/GEV scenario? They are pretty close in scale and add some new terrain types. Can anyone think of a board-game that uses maps that would be compatible with Ogre/GEV? Also I'm still trying to get a little feedback on the scenarios I sent to Henry. I've had some typos pointed out, and a few people have asked me to clarify some things, but other than that, I've heard nada. Anyone out there played them? Did you like them? Want to see more? If so, what types forces, and what scale battles do you want to see? Do you want massive battles using four, five or six maps? Now that Wounds Unlimited has gone under, is anyone planning on posting their Ogre scenario here? I've also been playing around with a scenario where one side is composed of Ogres, drones, and a small force of armor, against a force of primarily composed of infantry. Anyone like the idea? Or a retreat under fire scenario? As for my general rants, does anyone one have a clue as to what the next product release for the Ogre line will be. I for one would still like to see a second Ogre reinforcement pack. One with counters for all of the Ogres, the light howitzer, Radar dishes, and rules for using Jam Screens and some of the other goodies from ogre miniatures in the board game. I'd also like it to include some new terrain types. How about a map the morphs with the original Ogre map? If enough of use badger them with ideas, I'm sure we could convince them there is a market out there for more new material. I'd like to see a new expansion pack about every year or so. Lastly, does anyone know if SJG panning on doing anything special for Ogre's 25th anniversary next year? ===== [How about releasing the second edition of OGRE Minis by then? ;-) Have you tried putting miniatures on the Battletech maps? -HJC] ============================== From: Darren Breland Subject: Battle Suit & Starship Troopers >From: Sumnerd1234@cs.com >I don't have a copy Starship Troopers myself (a friend of mine had one, but >he moved to DC), but I'd like to get a copy of the rules if anyone's willing >to part with them. My God man! Cover that up. Your age is showing... :-) Seriously though I think I have an old copy of ST rules hanging around somewhere, complete with box and counters. If I can dig it up and scan in the rules (breaking about a thousand copyrights) I will ship 'em off to you. oops! Now my age is showing... how embarassing. ===== From: "Mark A. Siefert" Subject: Battle Suit & Starship Troopers >From: Sumnerd1234@cs.com > In the Ogre Book, Vol. 1 there are rules for converting Ogre units for use in > Starship Troopers. Has anyone given any thought to converting Battlesuit for > use with it? Do you mean the Avalon Hill game? After perusing the rules I found that the rules to be slightly slanted in the favor of the Arachnids, or as my gaming buddy Steve put it: "Bugs win." However, using Battlesuit as the engine for a Starship Troopers-based game, that would be kind of cool. Later, Mark A. Siefert "He said: 'You may have won the battle, but I'm... I'm out of ammunition!'" --The Four Postman, "The Chainsaw Juggler" E-MAIL: siefertma@wi.rr.com WWW: http://www.homegame.org/siefert ============================== From: Servitor@aol.com Subject: OGRE Macrotures > That is what I'd most like to see, reports about OGRE gameplay at Actually, the battle I will be recording will be at my friend's house (yes, I have friends...) since he has a whole acre of land for a "backyard" that will be perfect for carrying out a truly humongous battle (2 MK Vs versus 2 x SHVY, 10 x HVY, 8 x LT, 6 x MSL, 15 x GEV, 4 x HWZ and 40 squads of INF). Now, you might think that's a bit much vs. two MK V Ogres, but previous experience at cons have shown that the two Ogres are far more dangerous (especially when they stick together) than their 150 points value suggests. Believe me, the defense force needs those extra 72 points... However, we WILL be running OGRE Macrotures at Dragon Con, so I suppose I can try to record that one sufficiently to turn it into a battle report. best, John Hurtt (Servitor@aol.com) ============================== From: Darren Breland Subject: Edition Identification >From: Anthony Vernier >My guess is a 2nd edition later printing. Anyone want to hazard a >guess........I got a good deal so I'm happy what ever the answer. Always >nice to own a piece of history. No my friend I think you have a bona fide original. Microgame 8 by Metagaming $3.95..( those days are loooong gone). If I am not wrong it is a first ed original print. Got a color drawing of 2 GEV's on the cover, 1 coming at ya the other getting blown literally sky high? If so then it's like mine... original ed. Congrats on owning a piece of Ogre history! ============================== From: Darren Breland Subject: OGRE Battlefields >From: Stephan Beal >I've never agreed with the idea of Militia in this game for exactly >these reasons: complexity and inconstency with current units/rules. Try >.... Totally agreed. My prob however, with the whole militia unit is that they have No Armor, no Combat Environment suit, nuthin! A flak jacket and helmet (maybe), an Assault Rifle (think G11 or similar), a few TAC Missle launchers and away ya go. For militia I picture mostly poorly trained, self-equipped, loosely organized local yokels. Ok... I buy 'em in low intensity conflicts... RAID type scenarios mostly. But in a full blown modern battle... no way.. they are just unrealistic even if they do work per the rules. I think they are a major failing and only belong in certain scenarios. In the CBR nightmare of the Ogre battlefield an un-powersuited grunt is a dead grunt. No question. No viable EMS, no self contained environment, no protection from chem/bio/rads and you are one dead Thanksgiving turkey...a fine red mist painting the landscape. If I were a GEV/SHVY, etc. commander the second I was confronted with militia I would switch to a chem/bio agent and grease the whole lot with one shot. Leave 'em wheezing, convulsing, and choking to death on their own blood. Sounds nasty but it is the Last War and everything goes. Just my $1.02... ===== [We know that some fragment of Humanity survived the war so the Bio hazard wasn't that great, but also I can see limited protection against NBC threats through gear or drugs (Cheers!) for much less expense than fully powered bodyarmor. -HJC] ============================== From: Michael Powers Subject: OGRE Special Rules You're right that there are a lot of 'special rules' and 'odd units' in Ogre...however, I find that most of these units are 'self-contained', in the sense that if you're not using that unit then you don't need to know the rules. It's like Star Fleet Battles...if you're using PFs, then of course you need to know all the myriad ways that PFs differ from regular ships. However, if you're _not_ using PFs, then it doesn't matter if one player knows nothing at all about them and the other player wrote the rulebook. IOW...if you think the rules for militia are too complicated for a newbie to handle...then don't take any militia, and you won't lose any significant parts of the game. -- Michael Powers Graduate Student, GWU/JIAFS NASA Langley Research Center (757) 864 4457 -- m.t.powers@larc.nasa.gov ============================== Henry J.
