(Never got there, damn it!) > [And what do they fill up their tractors with? -HJC] The same; they sell what's left to the military and corporations. > From: stephan beal > Subject: Tank power > i'm not disagreeing, but i feel compelled to point out that many > forecasts say we won't have any notable fossil fuels in the timeframe > of The Last War. (Of course, many have been saying for 50 years that > our oil fields won't last another 20 years.) See earlier remarks -- the "running out of oil" lie has been propa- gated since the OPECerheads turned off the taps in the '70s. May- be 20% of the world's oilfields have been exploited; the rest await someone telling the eco-freaks to go f*** a redwood. :) > > Then there's the additional difficulty of protecting an oil field from > attack - it wouldn't take much of a near miss to set one ablaze, i > imagine. Only if you hit the pumping stations. So long as the oil is in the ground, it's effectively safe. > From: "Herb Diehr" > Subject: Anti-grav in the Ogreverse > With a bit of help from the anti-grav in > trucks Umm, there's no anti-grav in the OGREverse. GEVs use air cushion tech, not countergrav. > Anti-grav would be of less use (with all due respects to Col. Hammer). Umm, the tanks in Drake's _Hammer's Slammers_ are GEVs, not anti-grav. > Fortunately, with oil being of little use, need or availability, the > middle-east can safely return to the middleages where it seems happiest. Have the "civilized" nations set up small fortified colonies on the edges of the Middle East, then send the children out there for a few years; when they come back, the ungrateful little slackmozers will be hitting the ground in thanks that they were born where they were. :) > Nano-tech comes later... Actually, I proved in a _Car Wars_ campaign (for Cthulhu's sake, DO NOT ask me why I did this), I proved that nanotechnology renders all forms of war impossible -- and that whoever first devel- opes nanotech first is going to rule the world. > This is why the EU will take the Russias and Balkans and Mediteranean > Africa. Not Freakin' Likely. The decreasing birth-rate of "native" Euros will result in Suleiman's Dream being fulfilled -- Europe will be over- run by immigrants from the Middle East and Northern Africa. Russia will remain the s***hole it's always been, filled to choking with Central Asians and Middle Easterners (China will snarf the eastern bits of Siberia -- again), and SE Europe will either go pure- ly Middle Eastern or remain a, well, balkanized mess. > WW I and the Versailles Treaty > have sown the destruction of Europe in any recognizable form for > generations. Yup. The US should have taken over when it had the chance, in '45 -- squash the Soviets, then strip away all forms of technology, leaving Eurasia back as it was during the pre-Roman era; the US, having all the advanced tech, would serve as arbiter of disputes. But, then, I'm a cynic. :) > [Just imagine what kind of designs you could do, if the Ogreverse had > anti-grav... > > TL9_Ogre_Magi_CSA-10 [...] > -HJC] You've been talking to Michael Garrity*, haven't you? :) CF [*: This was the *&^%$#@! in the Omaha Car Wars group who combined _CW Tanks_ with the "Uncle Schmalbert" section of _CW Catalog From Hell_, and BUILT A COMPLETELY LEGAL CAR WARS-SPEC OGRE MARK THREE!] ===== [Nope. Check out either the old or new Ogre Book and you'll see what I'm mumbling about... -HJC] ===== From: Sethkimmel@aol.com Subject: Tank Power > [And what do they fill up their tractors with? -HJC] Use Clydesdales if they have to, though I'd think there would be a market pressures to produce corn oil for vehicle consumption in a direct inverse ratio to the price of diesel as petroleum starts to disappear....ie. oil never runs out -- it gradually turns into corn oil as the prices spike upward to where corn oil costs as much as diesel. We could run EVERY diesel in the US on the stuff today but it's not cost effective. I bet in 2085 it will be.... ===== From: "Louis Wardlaw IV" Subject: Tank Power First of all none of the synthetic oil production methods of the past have ever proven to be economical. Japan had some simular idea involving the refinement of plants to produce oil, and Germany created synthetic oil from coal. As far as reserves are concerned: many countries have massive oil reserves which are being expanded all of the time by new exploration. Not to mention, the development of marine technology to develop deepwater prospects. Even so, I think the next logical automobile engine would be run on natural gas. In Venezuela many old cars are being converted over to run off natural gas of which can move a car 500 kilometers for a handful of pennies. Reactors on tanks within the next 60-100 years, well it could happen. All we have to do is look at the explosion of computer technology advances within the last 20 years, and see that technology does not follow a predictable trend. As far as the Opec contries controling the market, that is simply not true anymore. In fact, the Arabic oil embargo of the seventies hurt them way more in the long run than it did us by diminishing their market share. As far as Europe falling apart, I seriously doubt it. For one, they are socialists which means that nobody goes hungry nor is anybody really that poor. It is a fact that content people are far less likely to cause trouble then desperate poverty striken peoples. ============================== From: Sethkimmel@aol.com Subject: Ogre minis chess set > King - Command Post (preferably mobile) > Queen - Ogre Mk I or Superheavy Tank > Rook - Heavy Tank (or HWZ?) > Knight - GEV (unpredictable) > Bishop - Missile Tank (strikes from far away) > Pawn - Infantry I can't resist: Black is the above, and white is a MkV. It has the powers of ALL the pieces.... Of course it's horribly vulnerable to fuzzy wuzzy....:-) ============================== From: Sethkimmel@aol.com Subject: Anti-grav in the Ogreverse > Anti-grav would be of less use (with all due respects to Col. Hammer). Thought they were air cushion, not anti grav? And what Ogre equivalent's would his hovertanks, combat cars, hover SP guns, and skimmer infantry be? ============================== Send all submissions or mailing list changes or problems to ogre@sjgames.com Archives for this mailing list may be found at http://www.io.com/~hcobb/ General online support for the OGRE game is at http://www.sjgames.com/ogre Ogre, G.E.V., Shockwave and other products mentioned here are trademarks or registered trademarks of Steve Jackson Games.
