They are simply too expensive, >and the mere act of creating one indicates a desire to go to war. You could say exactly the same thing for Dreadnoughts, but we all built them for fifty years. Those things were truly huge, and were mostly built to blast away at each other: cruisers were the commerce raiders, shore bombardment was rare. They were phenomenally expensive to build, train, and operate, and didn't exactly have a lot of peace time uses. My gut agrees that there will be no Ogres, but I would've bet against the Iowa class being built, too, if I were making my guesses in 1860. >To understand why _GO_ fails as badly as it does, realize: > >_GURPS_ turns are 1 second long. >_O_ turns are *4 minutes* long. (That's 240 seconds.) > >So, in _O_, a tank fires once every 4 minutes or so (early cannon >only took 5...), whereas in _GURPS_, that cannon fires once every >*second*. > >There are Things In This World Man Was Not Meant To GURPS. One shot in GURPS does not necessarily equate to one attack in G.E.V. In fact, after spending several seconds IDing a target and lining up an attack you would probably fire several rounds at varying angles and velocities to arrive on target simultaneously and hopefully overwhelm the point defenses. A series of these attacks equates to the die roll you make in G.E.V. You can see the same thing in the damage numbers - few weapons can penetrate their intended victim with a single shot (especially the smaller weapons, like infantry toys). It would take successive hits to get through. There are still all kinds of problems with playing GO and trying to get the same results as the board game, but its not a simple issue. ===== [I wrote up the infantry fix in GO. Go subscribe to Pyramid to read it. -HJC] ============================== From: "Dominique Sumner" Subject: New Ogres and other units. Just to liven things up over at the OGRE Message boards, I've posted several new Ogres for your pleasure. I've gotten a little feed back on them already, so feel free to through $.02 into the mix. Just for fun here's another one I came up with. With assistance from their Pan European allies, the Brazilian's manged to develop and field a few of their own unique cybertank designs. Most fo them were equivilent to either the Mk I or Mk III in size. The first of the larger designs was the "Caçador", or "Hunter" which was designed to take on Combine Mk III's. Brazilian Caçador cybertank 1 Missile Rack (D4) 0 4 Missiles (6/5) 0000 2 External Missiles (6/5; D3) 00 4 Secondary Battery (3/3; D3) 0000 10 Antipersonnel (1/1 against infantry or D0 CP only; D1) 00000 00000 48 Tread units: Movements starts at M3 00000000 00000000 (movement drops to M2) 00000000 00000000 (movement drops to M1) 00000000 00000000 (movement drops to M0) I also tossed up my VERY rough version of what I think drone combat stats would look like. Any input would be helpful. ===== [Have you used the price calculator at http://www.io.com/~hcobb/gev/ogrecalc.html yet? -HJC] ============================== From: Andrew Walters Subject: Mark VI Raid @ GenCon I ran a tournament at GenCon using the Mark VI Raid scenario right off the web page. I didn't playtest it, stupid brain, and guess what? I don't think its balanced. Has anyone else tried it? The defense did roll badly, but *MAN* did the VI stomp toes. It was unscathed. Didn't lose a weapon, and only lost a dozen or so treads. With average rolls it would have lost an MP and maybe a missile rack, but basically it killed everything in sight. It can dish out so much damage that no armor unit ever gets a second shot. Even the +50% reinforcements changed nothing. Has anyone else used a VI in a game that turned out well? I have two minis and an awesome map, I want to use it at DunDraCon, but we need a working scenario. Andrew Walters ===== From: White Rat Subject: Mark VI Raid @ GenCon Hmmmmm. Double the defense and try again? See if you get an overkill scenario for the defenders? Raid is a rough scenario for the defense to begin with, and the Mk VI represents a horrific concentration of firepoewr in one hex. Under OGRE (not GEV) rules, it is nigh-impossible for enough stuff to be in range of it to do significant damage per turn, and even with GEV stacking, spillover fire will cause horrific casualties. I'm not saying it is broken, but it is a real tire-eating monster, that's for sure, and it is possible that a standard map isn't enough distance for *any* defensive force to stop it in, simply because of the limits on how many can be in firing range of it at a given time. I'd bet that in the hexless miniatures game, where getting more units in without stacking is less problematic, it wouldn't fare so well.
