====== OGRE Digest, June 10th, 2004 (Last: June 7th) ======== ===== Nuclear missiles From: "Chris French" From: AvaheilDotter@aol.com ===== A thin line of wooden men in iron suits. From: Andrew Walters ===== Ogre Army Builder? From: Andrew Walters ============================== From: "Chris French" Subject: Nuclear missiles > [Ogre rulebook page 3, "Although an infantryman could carry and direct > a tactical nuclear missile..." Oh look, here comes another Ogre! Ready, > aim... ...and the Infantryman is incinerated by the TNM's backblast, while the TNM simply crashes into the ground a few feet away due to not having sufficient acceleration to reach flight speed (which, assuming the Infantryman survives the backblast, kills him dead when the TNM's warhead detonates). And by the way -- if this *were* a viable option, there'd be nothing on the battlefield *but* TNM-carrying INF. Meanwhile, our friend the OGRE can not only carry the nuclear missile, but the booster rocket/EM launcher required to get it safely away from itself. Tho' if I remember the CM-detonation table correctly, even at Range 5, an OGRE risks damage.... > Does that remind you of a certain armor unit favored by 21st century > cavalry units? -HJC] Again, the "proper" nuclear missile on the OGRE ends this prac- tice permanent-like. If you'd like, I can chart out the damage ef- fects on a "Fuzzy-Wuzzy" GEV or LGEV force attacking an OGRE; my calculations say the "soap opera" is over. > So increase the pricetag of the monster tanks to 15VPs each and give > infantry the ability to dig foxholes or something. -HJC] Or just abolish SHVYs altogether. Figure they suffer the same problems as Hitler's supertanks -- they're just too damned big to be viable. (Anything that size or above needs to be an OGRE.) CF ============================== From: AvaheilDotter@aol.com Subject: Nuclear missiles > Granted, a few homicidally loyal cybertanks would be really > useful in convincing the rest of the planet to Sit Down, Shut Up, > and Do As They're Told about now. Until the fallout from the combat gets back to the US. There is no such thing as a clean nuclear bomb. Especially not one which touches the ground with the fireball. The Ogreverse must resemble H.G.Wells' future where humanity is living underground for centuries to hide from the radiation. Sincerely; Stanley A Leghorn ============================== From: Andrew Walters Subject: A thin line of wooden men in iron suits. [Have you ever tried spreading out your infantry to one squad per hex? It is a nasty munchkin trick, but it works. -HJC] Hmmm. #1 Nope, never tried it. Obviously a defensive tactic. It costs you 2 points per hex. The enemy has to slow to one hex per turn to blast their way through with normal attacks. If they overrun you get a 1/3 chance of destroying a HVY that enters, a 2/3 chance of destroying the other typical armor units. Really not bad if all you want to do is stop the enemy. If there are just a couple MSL or HWZ behind and plenty of INF, you could really make advancing expensive. #2 I sense the suggestion that my infantry basing would be sub-optimal for this tactic. I suppose that's true - only one in six of my squads is alone on a stand. Of course, only one in three of your squads are alone on a stand. If I expected to do this much I'd spend another four dollars and twenty four cents (the latter for the bases) for eight platoons worth of individually mounted squads. The more serious problem with my basing technique is how do you indicate how many squads are in a GEV-PC? I am *not*going to buy four times as many GEV-PCs as I expect to use, with permanently affixed 0, 1, 2, and 3 squads. I'm still working on an answer for this. Andrew ===== [Actually Msl Tanks don't mix that well with grunts. GEVs are good at rushing behind the iron suits after pinpricking somebody. Everybody I've seen just puts a mounted stand of infantry on top of the GEV-PC. -HJC] ============================== From: Andrew Walters Subject: Ogre Army Builder? I was getting envious of other games because they have army builders. Well, I have a Java development kit, some images, and absolutely no judgement about what is and is not worth my time, so its time to level out this inequality. But I can't quite figure out what an Ogre army builder would do. Sure you could just ask how many of each type, but the software wouldn't be doing much for you, except multiplying by six. It could offer various types of platoons and let you build a TOE, then give the quantity of each type and the point value. That would be interesting, but not all that necessary. Can anyone else think of anything it could do that would make it fun to tinker with?
