The basic rulebook of any World of Darkness game frames its central conflict from the perspective of "the Good Guys." The book then goes on to describe those who stand in their way. As supplements are released over time, we come to realize that the putative "Bad Guys" aren't really as bad as we'd thought. In fact, closer inspection always reveals that there are "Really Bad Guys" hiding in the shadows. These Really Bad Guys make the merely Bad Guys look positively saintly in comparison, thereby paving the way for another supplement allowing us to play the Bad Guys as characters. While this can be frustrating at times, it can also give an aging game a fresh perspective. The Guide to the Technocracy definitely offers Mage: The Ascension players a new way of looking at the World of Darkness.

Let me confess it up front: I've always had a soft spot for the Technocracy. Maybe it's their secrecy and cool devices, maybe it's the black hats and mirrorshades. Whatever it is, I find myself rather easily swayed by their propaganda. After all, The Technocracy is all that stands between unenlightened Humanity and the myriad supernatural entities of the World of Darkness. The Technocracy enforces the paradigm accepted by the Masses. The Technocracy protects the Earth against the Horrors of the Deep Umbra. Whether Tradition Mages . . .
