Daily Illuminator Archive for March 2015
March 2, 2015:
Making stuff up is fun. Heck, making stuff up is what we do for a living
. . .
March 3, 2015:
With the 35th anniversary of Steve Jackson Games just around the corner, I thought it'd be a great time to interview the first artist ever hired by Steve Jackson Games back in the 80s. He did cover paintings and interior illustrations for Space Gamer
magazine, Fantasy Gamer
magazine, and "games and supplements too numerous to mention." If you'd like us to do a live Google Hangout with Denis Loubet, let us know using the #SJGamesLIVE hashtag on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr, or post to our Forums.
When did you first start working with Steve Jackson Games?
Well, I can tell it was in 1980, because that's when the Demon cover came out . . .
March 4, 2015:
A perfect thing to do with the Munchkin Bricks pieces:
-- Steve Jackson
. . .
March 5, 2015:
All right, everyone's on board with the need for zombie defense - that's a good start. Usually some doctor played by Brad Dourif has to do something horribly wrong before the government heeds the crazed warnings of a fringe action-scientist played by Casper Van Dien . . .
March 6, 2015:
Are you a retailer? Are you going to GAMA in March? . . .
March 7, 2015:
I once spent several minutes exchanging pleasantries with a dracolich, causing my family to convulse with laughter. We were playing Castle Ravenloft
, a rather fun cooperative boardgame distillation of the Dungeons & Dragons
Fourth Edition ruleset that sends the heroes on missions where they have to work together to accomplish their goal . . .
March 8, 2015:
That's right, we're reprinting it! In June, The Awful Green Things from Outer Space
gets a reprint, in all its glory . . .
March 9, 2015:
Do you like roleplaying games? Do you like free things? . . .
March 10, 2015:
Did you know there's a news page dedicated solely to Munchkin
? We post a new item every Monday morning (not right at midnight like the Illuminator
, so don't get antsy!) and it's a great way to find out what's going on in the World of Munchkin
. . .
March 11, 2015:
Those of you who are Star Trek
fans do not need to be told: Leonard Nimoy passed away on February 27 2015. I never met him, although I did see him once across a huge hall, while he was heading for a sold-out seminar . . .
March 12, 2015:
Gamerati sent us this article, and it was a good read, so I thought I'd give it a signal boost. If you've ever been curious about how boardgames and roleplaying games have developed in other countries, this article will give you a lot of insight into that, as far as Brazil is concerned, at least . . .
March 13, 2015:
Literature - NOT just "fantasy," but modern literature
- has lost one of its greats. Sir Terry Pratchett is dead, of early-onset Alzheimer's, aged only 66 . . .
March 14, 2015:
Having trouble finding GURPS Characters
or GURPS Campaigns
? Good news! . . .
March 15, 2015:
GURPS Fourth Edition has provided a plethora of options for codifying various elements with stats: cities, armies, spaceships, and more. Now, we're bringing at-a-glance stats to organizations and groups, with GURPS Boardroom and Curia
. . .
March 16, 2015:
I will not be appearing at Chi-Fi, due to bad communications and non-payment. If you had hoped to see me at that show, I'm very sorry - but the con chair is no longer returning my calls or mail, I haven't even been reimbursed for the plane ticket, and the only other committee member I have ever spoken to could do nothing but refer me back to the chair . . .
March 17, 2015:
It's a universal truth that playing an RPG is made 250% better when you have a sweet portrait for your character. Unfortunately, I'm not an artist, and neither are you (unless you are, in which case, that's pretty rad) . . .
March 18, 2015:
Do you want more maps for Car Wars Classic
? How about some classic maps, but blown up to full, playable size? . . .
March 19, 2015:
We've entered into an agreement with Renegade Game Studios to create a line of Munchkin
trading cards! These are due out later in 2015 . . .
March 20, 2015:
The transparently humorous and gloomy Atlas Games
visited Warehouse 23 and they left three new Easter eggs behind for you . . .
March 21, 2015:
Fans of the GURPS Dungeon Fantasy
line have reason to celebrate this month, with an issue of Pyramid
devoted to expanding its potential and possibilities. Pyramid #3/76: Dungeon Fantasy IV
features a new template -- the psychic slayer -- plus abilities, power-ups, enemies, and more, all from the pen of Sean Punch (who was also the mastermind behind GURPS Dungeon Fantasy 14: Psi
). This issue continues the excitement with two new monster prefixes that go great with GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 1
(plus a boatload of modified monsters that take advantage of those options), a meaty guide to tweaking and enhancing magic, new magic items of interest to martial artists, a look at living
dungeon rooms, and much more . . .
March 22, 2015:
Over the recent holiday break I completed two new books about the marketing techniques toymakers used in the '80s to sell me (and millions of kids like me) action figures. Now writing about toys isn't exactly new for me, but it isn't every day that I take the time to actually assemble my thoughts into two hardcover books . . .
March 23, 2015:
The awesome folks over at Boom! Studios have been doing a fantastic job with the Munchkin
comic . . .
March 24, 2015:
Last week, Andrew, Randy, and I flew to Las Vegas for two days so we could host a party for retailers at GAMA Trade Show. Phil gave his presentations at GAMA, and told all the retailers to come to the Bally's penthouse to socialize and tell us what we can do to better serve them . . .
March 25, 2015:
February marked the first anniversary of the Warehouse 23 changeover. (Why didn't we have anniversary cake?!) . . .
March 26, 2015:
Did you miss Munchkin
World NYC in February? Did you gloat to everyone that you were there and they want proof? . . .
March 27, 2015:
I have just signed up to support the Ferrofluid project on Kickstarter, at the "you get both toys" level. If you have never seen ferrofluid, stop what you are doing, right now . . .
March 28, 2015:
I enjoy Lord of the Fries
very much. I even had the privilege of publishing it once, while Cheapass Games was in its Relatively Dimly Lit Ages . . .
March 29, 2015:
Our Kickstarter project for Car Wars Arenas
launches on March 31, 2015, and while discussing the project at the GAMA Trade Show I spent a little time talking about the cover artwork. The cover artwork was first created for Space Gamer
#50, and as a kid it was always one of my favorite Car Wars
images and I felt it should have been a book cover instead of just a magazine cover . . .
March 30, 2015:
Late last year we released a reprint of Car Wars Classic
and sold through our print run within the first week. Thousands of games gone in less than a week? . . .
March 31, 2015:
Some of you know that, in addition to being Marketing Director for Steve Jackson Games, I do quite a lot of freelance writing and game design for other companies, including Evil Hat Productions. That started a few years ago, when they asked me to do some system development on a book called Strange Tales of the Century
. . .
