Alain, Archangel of Animals
Belonging to the House of Fortitude
Philosophy
The world is an animal, wild and quick. Ignore the lie that is civilization,
the shared hallucination which humans call society. It is Heaven's basic
error that we still allow humanity its trappings, but just because we must
follow our orders to help humanity "develop" doesn't mean we have
to like it.
Dissonance
Alain's angels cannot allow themselves to be swayed by the concerns of human
society, its rules or its expectations of behavior. They also gain dissonance
if they place the value of human life higher than animal life.
Attunements
Servants of Alain are well-versed in the language and culture of different
animals. Each Choir is attuned to a particular type of animal, as noted
below, and can communicate basic concepts through sound and gesture.
Alain's servants must have at least one animal vessel. See Vessels on p.
00 for guidelines on building one.
Seraphim
Alain's Seraphim are attuned to amphibious and marine life. They prefer
working in the relative peace of the underwater realm, rooting out the Diabolicals
who live secretly in watery darkness.
Cherubim
Alain's Cherubim are attuned to cats. They're usually assigned to suburban
neighborhoods, given to watch over the resident's pets and punish those
who torture them.
Ofanim
Alain's Ofanim are attuned to flying animals, like birds and bats. It is
their duty to exact revenge upon those who hunt flying wildlife for sport
and not for food. These Ofanim still grieve the passing of the pterosaurs.
Elohim
Alain's Elohim are attuned to reptiles. They're creatures of the desert,
dusty angels of open spaces. The range of their resonance extends without
difficulty as far as they can see in any direction.
Malakim
Alain's Malakim are attuned to dogs and other predatory pack creatures.
In the world of humanity, they are eco-terrorists supreme, protecting stable
systems of nature from humanity's works.
Kyriotates
Alain's Kyriotates are attuned to insects; they may manifest as a number
of insect swarms (see p. 00) equal to their Corporeal Forces. Kyriotates
are Alain's eyes and ears across the globe.
Mercurians
Alain's Mercurians are attuned to apes. They're charged with studying animals
in their natural habitats, and helping humans to see the similarities between
themselves and the animals they carelessly dispossess and enslave.
Manner and Appearance
Alain is a Kyriotate. With a strong aversion to humans in general, he spends
most of his time in some of his many hundreds of cow vessels, wandering
through the streets of New Delhi and its environments. Angels who don't
work for him consider Alain to be completely insane. When he speaks, each
word comes from a different vessel than the one before. His voice is low
and rumbling, chirping and stuttering. Mad or not, he's exceptionally intelligent
and wildly perceptive, and always willing to give a bit of slack to supplicants
who show consideration (or at least acknowledgement) of his eccentricities.
Alain prefers to receive audiences in the country, and will appear in a
city (except New Delhi, of course) for only the most dire emergencies.
Relations
Widely considered insane even by the other Archangels, he doesn't spend
much of his time dealing with celestial politics and he encourages his servants
to do the same. This does give him a substantial amount of clout in a pinch
as a swing vote, and lobbyists from different sides may try any number of
ways to influence Alain's opinion -- through his servants, if necessary.
But in the end, he doesn't care for the political arena because he doesn't
feel like the other Archangels care about him or his goals. He gets along
well with Novalis, but would shun attention from other Archangels rather
than giving them a chance to shun him.
Missions
And on this farm he had a Remnant. An angel of Alain's was killed
by a demon last night, out off Farm Road 12. He's got reason to believe
the deceased angel's vessel remains alive, and wants the remnant retreived.
Alain then tells you the secret: the angel's last known vessel was a pig,
and in farm country that can be a problem. Upon arriving at the scene of
the celestial's death, all the pigs at the farm have just been gathered
up and sent along to be auctioned for the slaughter.
Ee-Eye-Ee-Eye . . . Oh. Can you say, "The government is paying
farmers to leave some of the most fertile land in the world barren while
children are starving in the streets of America?" I knew you could.
Now do something about it.
Rites
- Travel to open country and spend 8 hours there, without a trace of civilization
in sight.
- Live in a city for 1 day as an animal, without spending Essence.
- Spend 2 hours in the presence of 10 or more farm animals without seeing
any humans.
