Dragon Scale Counters are plastic square or rectangular illustrated counters for use as an alternative or supplement to miniatures. They are designed to depict d20 System characters and monsters and match the specifications for facing on an "inch to five feet" scale. Bipeds are drawn from a three-quarters top/front view, and quadrupeds are drawn from a top-down aerial view. The majority are done in a colored pencil style, although there are a few science-fiction counters that are computer crafted images. Every individual counter can be viewed on the website prior to purchase.

Each counter (with a few exceptions) depicts one complete view of a creature or character, and makes an effort to scale sizes appropriately; thus a kobold is smaller than a hobgoblin which is smaller than an ogre, although each has only a 1" × 1" square to fit in. The current exceptions include a peasant boy and girl who are on the same counter, and a stirge counter with four of the critters on one square. Some of the earlier counters are not accurate on their facing for the creatures, such as many of the giants and the pit fiend and balor. A number of these are being addressed by relabeling them as advanced monster HD versions of the creature where the size has gone up. Other art choices make creatures tall where making them wide would have matched the art to the facing conventions better; for example, the glabrezou . . .
