I've always been wary of White Wolf produced fiction, but when the Clan Novels were announced, I immediately looked forward to them; I wanted to see what diabolical plot would forever change the World of Darkness. The idea of telling the epic story of the Kindred in 13 parts, each focusing on one of the Kindred clans, seemed like a good one: each part would tell a bit of the greater storyline while also telling its own contained story for that particular clan. After finishing Clan Novel Toreador, however, I was left with such a sour taste that I couldn't help but doubt the future of this series.

Clan Novel Toreador, written by White Wolf co-founder Stewart Wieck, is the first in the 13-part epic. Divided into three major sections, each one is separated into pseudo-chapters that open much like an episode of the X-Files, displaying location, date and time of the upcoming events. In Part One we meet Leopold, a young Kindred of the Toreador clan, a sculptor who lives on the fringes of Kindred and mortal society. His obsession is to be able to sculpt another vampire, something he seems unable to do for some unknown reason. After a lot of moping and "Woe-is-me" self-condemnation that would put any Goth to shame, he seeks help from the Tremere primogen, who agrees to help him by some magical means, though we're not told why. (An interesting note is that the highly reclusive Leopold knows for a fact . . .
