I was overjoyed to see a new ICE book on my last visit to the store. It had been a long time since anything for Rolemaster had come out and I was eager to see what this new project Nightmares of Mine was, exactly. The book is a smaller size, similar to Wizard of the Coast's Wizard Spell Compendium, or the recent release Crystar from Providence. In addition, like their other new release . . . And a 10 Foot Pole, it isn't a Rolemaster sourcebook. Instead, it goes under the RPG Sourcebook title, indicating a new series with its own logo. Why a horror book though? Well, with Wizards of the Coast's revision of Ravenloft, White Wolf's third edition of Vampire, and Chaosium's 5.9 version of Call of Cthulhu, "why not?" would be a better question.

But what is Nightmares of Mine? In nine chapters, organized like a Rolemaster book, Kenneth Hite (yes, that Kenneth Hite) gives us an overview of horror and how it can be used in roleplaying games. He uses introductory quotes (a technique readers of his "Suppressed Transmission" columns here in Pyramid are no doubt familiar with) from sources from the Dracula to Danse Macabre and everywhere in between. He uses examples which are part of our common literary heritage, ranging from H.P. Lovecraft to Shakespeare. This a very literary book, from an obviously well-read author.

He divides horror, much as King did, into three parts: dread, terror, . . .
