Destroy All Ogres! [sidebar]: Where to find Mothra and Ghidrah

In the Movies

Of course, the first place to begin looking for these creatures is in your local mafia-run movie rental establishment. Here are films that our heroes appeared in - prime reference material for the aspiring monster killer (or Ogre stomper).

Mothra

This first movie, like the first Godzilla film and unlike the rest of the lineup, seemed to have a sense of psychological depth. But instead of preying upon the fear of atomic power ravaging their cities, the Japanese were treated to a monstrous worm, drawn towards the siren song of two tiny attractive twin girls, who utterly controlled its writhings. Of course, the creepy crawlie turns into a moth and continues its destruction of the city. I dont know what it means, but its a frightening look into the male psyche.

Godzilla vs Mothra (aka Godzilla vs the Thing)

Campy, post-WW II anti-entrepreneur film, detailing the discovery of a Mothra egg, washed up on the shore of Japan from Monster Island. Godzilla spontaneously decides to take in the town, and the people of Tokyo call upon Mothra for help. In the end, we find Mothra destroyed, but two proto-Mothras hatch from the egg, mummifying Godzilla with spray webs. Yikes.

In this film, Godzilla is about as dumb as he gets, unlike these movies which sink lower.

Ghidrah. the Three-Headed Monster

This was the monsters first film, and a bad film it was. It had effects even young children would have a hard time describing as special, featuring Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra defending the people of Tokyo against this new contender. The good guys win.

Godzilla versus Monster Zero

A true high camp Japanese film, with the denizens of the newly discovered Planet X. The Planet X-ers call Ghidrah Monster Zero. There are no names on Planet X, only numbers. We require your Monsters One and Two to destroy our Monster Zero. One and Two, it turns out, are Godzilla and surprise guest-star Rodan, who end up being mind-controlled by the aliens, along with Monster Zero, to lay waste to the Earth, so the Planet X-ers can come live here. Of course, they're foiled by those inventive Earthlings.

Godzilla is smart and noble in this dumb and idiotic film.

In the Flesh - er, Plastic

There are some models out there, but given a few hours and ten bucks of material from a crafts store, anyone could make as good a Mothra as the one that appeared in the movies. For Mothra in its caterpillar form, staff writer Chris McCubbin suggests using a twinkie.

Ghidrah is more difficult to approximate, and while we've seen several large models, we have yet to find anything at Ogre scale that will work well. Barring anything else, there are always pipe cleaners.
