Warehouse 23 News: Who Cooked The Books?
Be the first on the Fraud Squad to gather enough evidence to take down a financials fudging corporation.
Friday night, the results of the Origins Awards were announced, and Steve Jackson Games was among the big winners!
Munchkin 2 - Unnatural Axe won for Best Card Game Supplement, and Star Munchkin won for Best Traditional Card Game. With the prior victories of the Munchkin's Guide to Power Gaming and the Munchkin card game itself, this means the Munchkin franchise has gone 4 for 4 in Origins Award voting. We're also thrilled that Chez Greek won for Best Graphic Design of a Card Game or Supplement. Thanks to the Academy and to all who voted!
Additionally, our good friend John Kovalic was inducted into the Origins Hall of Fame for his contributions to our industry -- definitely a well-deserved honor. Congratulations, John!
Warehouse 23 News: What Lurks In The Wild Places
Lord of the Rings: Fell Beasts and Wondrous Magic draws back the curtain on both sides of the battle, revealing full descriptions and game statistics for the greatest terrors of the land and the magical tools with which heroes can battle them.
This evening at Origins, William Toporek will be running his GURPS "Iron GM" competition. Each GM gets three random books, six players, and one hour to create characters and adventures that use material from all three books. As much fun to watch as it is to play - if you are at Origins be in the Steve Jackson Games room (C123) at 7:00 P.M.
If you need something to do until seven, and you are very nice to the MIB in the Steve Jackson Games room (bribes help), they might show you the soon-to-be-released Munchkin Fu.

June 27, 2003: Illuminated Site of the Week: Would We Lie To You?
Someone offers you the chance to supposedly score big by helping some refugee from a failing government secret away millions of dollars . . . if you'll just give them a little seed money to get things rolling. If you haven't been spammed with a money scam like this, chances are you don't own a computer.
The good folks at Scam o Rama don't think kindly of these on-line cheats, but that doesn't mean they don't know how to mine the so-called Lads from Lagos for a good time. The worst of them are posted and held up for ridicule. Don't forget to check out their FAQ.

Warehouse 23 News: Life, Love, And The World At Its Fallible Best
Before Dork Tower, John Kovalic drew a strip called Wild Life which has run in newspapers across North America.
Tomorrow afternoon I head off for Origins . . . to wake up bright and early Friday and run the Pirate Game. If you missed the message about that a couple of days ago, read back until you find it . . . Like every GM since the dawn of time, I'm working on my scenario the night before the convention. The rules keep getting shorter; this is good.
I forgot to mention "Frag Evil Stevie." This is a Frag game I'll run Saturday. It will involve a lot of players at once, all trying to kill . . . ME. But I get a better gun, and I shoot back. In fact, I shoot back FIRST. We're going to be using the 3-D board that Phil Reed built.
And we did get copies of all the Strange Synergy components as they went out the door to the printers, so I'll be showing it off in the SJ Games room. See you there.
Warehouse 23 News: Roman Apes And Jungle Cats
The Panthera Tribe and Simian Empire figures from the Hundred Kingdoms line of wargame miniatures also make great figures for anthropomorphic roleplaying games.

The tallest structure in the Combine arsenal is the Laser Tower. Looming over the battlefield, it's a terror against cruise missiles in the air, and has an unmatched range for tagging enemy armor on the ground.
The biggest problem with this sky-scraping weapon is actually finding one. Well, now you can, through Warehouse 23!
For complete rules and strategy advice, as well as more buildings, visit the Combine Structures Page.
Warehouse 23 News: The Adventures Of A (Young) Lifetime
Welcome to the magical world of SnapDragons, John Kovalic and Liz Rathke's fresh new comic about five kids, one cat, some games and the power of imagination.
We were able to get a single snapshot of the upcoming Ogre Ninja.
This false-color image unfortunately shows only a part of the Ogre, but it was escorting a band of black-clad infantry loaded down with take-out meals.
Warehouse 23 News: Games With A Historical Touch
Queen's Necklace is a game of gem-selling, influence, and intrigue at the French Royal Court. Mystery of the Abbey is a new kind of "whodunit" game of deduction and intuition, set in a medieval abbey.
My big event at Origins this year is a session of Evil Stevie's Pirate Game. For those who have not heard of this: it's a "naval miniatures" game in which the miniatures are Lego ships, from less than a foot long to BIG. It's cinematic rather than realistic, and heavy on the roleplaying. In other words, it's an excuse for adults (note: I did NOT say "grownups") to get down on the floor and play with Lego while yelling "Arrrr!" a lot.
The link above will take you to an online rules set, but I haven't updated those rules pages in a while. The version you'll find online is considerably more complex than the rules we'll be using, for two reasons. In the first place, I learn a bit more every time I run the game. And in the second place, Origins took the planned eight-hour slot and cut it into four two-hour game sessions . . . with separate ticket sales for each one. So you're going to have to learn the rules FAST, and I'm going to have to keep the game moving FAST.
To that end, I've gone really cinematic. For instance, no longer will you have to return to port to buy a new ship when you get enough gold. For this game, once you get enough glory, you'll "level up" instantly, right there in the middle of the ocean. Think video game . . .
So, if this sounds like fun, come play. A few things to know:
- Each session will start with 30 pirates, all commanding one-gun cutters. I'm taking a total of 45 ships; the biggest two have four guns. We'll see if anyone can work up to that level in two hours.
- Rules will be taught right there on the spot, and you'll start off as part of a fleet, so nobody will be completely on their own, even if they have never played before.
- Anyone who shows up in costume will get some extra crewmen. A really great costume will even be worth some glory right at the start!
- Sinking the foe will, of course, be worth glory. But helping your allies . . . not just in character, but helping them with rules and movement . . . will also be good for glory points.
- There will be small prizes for each session, and a BIG prize . . . a new-in-sealed-box "Armada Flagship," which currently e-Bays for over $50 . . . for the most effective and fearsome captain of the whole day.
- If you're a real Lego nut, I will welcome help setting up Friday morning (we're in Franklin C/D, and setup starts at 9) and breaking down at the end of the day. And helping me set up might give in-game benefits too. Fnord.

Warehouse 23 News: Liberty. Justice. Security. Peace.
Silver Age Sentinels Tri-Stat places the themes and ideals of the Silver Age of comics in a modern context and supports the entire range of superhuman power levels in your adventures - from street vigilantes to spandex-clad heroes to galactic entities.
This week, from Thursday through Sunday, a great many game fans will be at Origins in Columbus, Ohio. SJ Games will be there with lots of events run by the Men In Black; we have our own room again this year. William Toporek and Ross Jepson from our staff will be on hand. And as usual, those of you wishing to buy our Stuff will be able to get it at the Adventure Retail booth.
And I'll be there as a Guest of Honor; I will be doing some talks and showing off some especially cool Stuff that's brand new, and a few things that are still in development. I'll also be wandering around the dealer area, hanging out in the SJ Games room (here's your chance to whack me at Munchkin . . . if you can), making an occasional appearance at Adventure Retail to annoy Jerry and Company, and generally Being Around. Come say hi?
And all day Friday I'll be running the Pirate Game. More on this tomorrow.

Good Things About Working At A Game Company, #23 in a series:

Target: Iraq
How did the U.S. take Saddam down? Could we have done it sooner? And what could have gone wrong?
The "new" Iraq conflict wasn't new. It started in 1990, and "slow war" continued, in the skies over Iraq and in the U.N., for 12 years.
Target: Iraq explores both the "slow war" and "fast war" against Iraq. A political game covers the 12 years of Saddam's recovery and buildup after the first Gulf War. It sets the stage for the coalition attack in April, played out as a fast-moving wargame.
Target: Iraq was created by Austin Bay. His Arabian Nightmare, a simulation of the first Gulf War published by 3W in 1990 and updated in 1991, is still used as a war-college training tool.
With full-color map, die-cut full-color counters, and detailed rules, Target: Iraq is a classic military simulation game taken straight from today's headlines.
Boxed game with full-color map and full-color die-cut counters.

June 10, 2003: Delayed Products: A Status Report
Over the last couple of years, we have announced entirely too many items that then dropped off the schedule. Here's a status report and explanation on them all.
Note that none of these products is currently on the announced schedule. The ones in the first list, "Still On The Way," are actively moving forward, but not necessarily moving very fast. The others are moving slowly or not at all.
Still On the Way
1901 One Page Bulge
1902 Raid on Iran
These two wargames were shelved because of print buying problems. The problems are being solved for Target: Iraq, so we'll reannounce these games before too much longer.
2120 Cardboard Heroes Modern Characters
Some of the colored art was lost to computer problems . . . which should not have been as much of a problem as it was, but this came during a time when we had lots of art-direction difficulties. This product was simply ignored for many months. It is no longer being ignored, and we hope to announce it soon.
2150 Cardboard Heroes Castles: Walls and Towers
2151 Cardboard Heroes Castles - The Keep
Moving forward quickly. Any day now we'll get another test shot from the die-cutters, and this one might be the one where we say "Go!". Feedback on our samples at GAMA was very good. We know we have the potential for a hugely cool line here, but only if the first release is as near perfect as we can get it.
40-3005 Car Wars Vehicle Design System
We put the whole Car Wars line on hold for as long as it took to get this vital part of the 5th Edition system exactly right. Scott Haring is working on the project now. It will happen.
40-3001 Car Wars: Road Wolves
40-3002 Car Wars: Fortress Town
40-3003 Car Wars: Dueltrack
40-3004 Car Wars: Interceptor
40-3006 Chassis & Crossbow
Once the Vehicle Design System is under control, we'll revisit the other announced Car Wars books. Our current thinking is that all the ideas are still good, but we'll give people some time to look at the Vehicle Design System first.
6419 GURPS Dark Places
This was Phil Reed's baby, and we occupied his time with other things. So the Dark Places book languished. A new author is now working with his notes; this book will appear.
6719 GURPS Vorkosigan
The manuscript is complete; the pages are laid out. What is lacking is art. The art on this book is very important to both us and to the author of the novels, Lois McMaster Bujold, because it will represent "official" images of the characters . . . and it has not gone well. After the first artist had passed his deadline to turn in all art, he told us he didn't want to do the project at all. The second artist had to drop out due to medical problems. Can you hear our art director tearing his hair?
It's a wonderful book, and when we get wonderful art to go with it, we'll release it.
Indefinitely Delayed but Definitely NOT Dead
These products are now off the schedule, but some work is being done on them.
6091 GURPS India
The manuscript we received was not satisfactory. We'll eventually do this book, but right now we don't have an author. We're looking for one.
3203 Ogrethulhu
3205 Ogre Scenario Book 2
7204 Ogre Miniatures Second Edition
Further Ogre support will have to wait for some free spaces in Steve's schedule, but he's not going to abandon the very first game he ever did . . . So these will happen, but who knows when?
Indefinitely Delayed and Probably Dead
That is, we're not ready to bury them, but they are off the schedule and no work is being done on them.
1328 Tabloids
As playtesting wound down, we discovered that a very similar concept had been used in a similarly-themed mass market game several years ago. Steve would like to rethink and revive it, but has his hands full with other projects right now.
10-2108 Ogre Miniatures: Combine Set 8
10-2208 Ogre Miniatures: Paneuropean Set 8
10-2113 Ogre Miniatures: Combine Set 13
As previously announced, all new Ogre Miniatures box sets are on hold.
6625 Best of JTAS
It currently appears that demand for this book doesn't justify a minimum print run.
6626 GURPS Traveller: Starship Forms
This will appear in SOME form when "Starships" comes out.
Definitely Dead
6544 GURPS Assassins
This product will never appear . . . but the subject matter and much of the content was rolled into the upcoming GURPS Covert Ops.
6881 GURPS Traveller: Heroes 2 - Fighter Jocks
The first "Traveller Heroes" character book, to our disappointment, didn't sell well, so we canceled the series.

The Dragonstar: Player's Companion is an indispensable compendium of new classes, feats, spells, spellware, psionics rules, and more for the Dragonstar campaign setting.

June 6, 2003: Illuminated Site of the Week: It's Almost A Good Idea
DARPA is still on the cutting edge. This time they're slicing through that thin veil of your privacy with the proposed LifeLog. Their site calls it "an ontology-based (sub)system that captures, stores, and makes accessible the flow of one person’s experience in and interactions with the world in order to support a broad spectrum of associates/assistants and other system capabilities." Of course, the people the LifeLogger is reporting on just might see it differently. The story in Wired calls it "an all-seeing, ultra-intrusive spying program."
Well, now we're just splitting hairs.

Sasquatch coverage of the South is pretty much complete with the Chattahoochee Bigfoot Organization. Add this to Oregonbigfoot.com, the Texas Bigfoot Research Center, and the Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization. Time for our Yankee brethren to step up operations.

Warehouse 23 News: For The A.I. On The Go
The Red Dwarf A.I. Screen keeps vital adventure notes secret while giving immediate access to handy game data and statistics.
If you have this page bookmarked, you might not have seen the new home page design. It's not as dramatic as the old one - very few things are as dramatic as a bright color on a black background - but it's far more readable than light-on-black, has room for more information, and ought to be friendlier to more browsers. Thanks to Phil and Justin for creating the design, and the irreplaceable Kira for coding it.
More pages will be updated soon, both graphically and in terms of content . . . most especially, the "Our Games" page, which is so desperately out of date that I'm not even making the reference a link.
If you see a page problem, drop a line to our new Webmaster, Giles Schildt.

June 1, 2003: Car Wars Art By Larry Elmore
Elmore is e-Baying one of the Car Wars paintings he did for TSR, back when we licensed them the rights to do choose-your-own-adventure books. Pretty. Check it out.. Bidding on this one ends soon.
