Warehouse 23 News: Dungeon Crawl With An Anime Feel
Offering multiple levels of mayhem, packed with a plethora of bizarre NPCs and hideous monsters, Big Eyes, Small Mouth: Dungeon puts an anime spin on the traditional dungeon adventure.
What? Landed? Crashed? Wandered away? We don't know. After we hyped the imminent arrival of the European Space Agency's Beagle 2 lander on the surface of Mars, it's only fair to mention that something seems to have gone quite wrong, which is not that unusual in the checkered history of attempted landings on the Red Planet.
CNN.com, as usual has the story. There's still hope, they say . . .
Archipelagos: The War of Shadows is the first in the Trilogy of Shadows campaign adventure series. The land is prepared for all-out battle against whatever depredations the enemy might unleash. Now, if only the enemy would show up!
I've been looking forward to this long holiday for months . . . not because I have any plans to travel, but because sometimes "I get to stay home and work!" can be said with no sarcasm at all. There are a number of projects that really need the kind of attention you can't give them when you also have to keep up with office responsibilities.
So I made a very, very long list, and I've been happily working down it. Well, fairly happily. Starting with Christmas, I had 11 days until going back to work. Unfortunately, when I sorted out all the really massive things I needed to deal with, there were 11. And then there are all the less-massive ones. We call this a "target-rich environment."
But it's not going too badly. I got Thursday's through Sunday's Big Things done. I'm a happy camper.
One of the things on my list for later in the week is to write a memo - to everyone who cares - about how the company did last year and what it'll do this year. Sort of a "stakeholders' report." Stay tuned.

Warehouse 23 News: Merchandising: Where The Real Money Is Made
Ever wondered about all the wonderful tie-in products for XCrawl? What about advertising, fans, sponsors, and all the rest? Welcome to the world of the Sellout!
I got home Saturday evening and downloaded 580 e-mail messages that had built up since Wednesday. Of these, 50 were not spam.
This would be less remarkable if I had not managed to access my e-mail queue on Thursday, at which time I deleted 300 accumulated spam messages -- meaning that over 94% of the nearly 900 messages I received in the last four days were robo-generated ad crap.
For those of you (very few among our fans, I'm sure) who claim that spam is a legitimate way of doing business, or worse, that it is in some warped way "free speech," I'll just point out that this is not an atypical week, and that everyone at SJ Games spends hours of time every month doing nothing but trashing spam. (We have a filter on our incoming mail; it is not perfect. We hope to improve it soon.) This is not free speech . . . it is wasting SJ Games thousands of dollars every month in staff time alone, as we are forced to sluice our e-mail through a sieve to find the occasional real message glinting in our inbox.
Yes, there are technical solutions that we can implement on our end, but please take a moment early in the new year to contact your appropriate state and national legislators and let them know that we are tired of weak, ineffective non-solutions to the spamdemic. It's time to shut these knaves down.
(Incidentally, if you sent me an e-mail message and I haven't replied to it by the second week of January, you might want to resend it . . . it's possible that it was an innocent victim of the Great Spam Purge.)

Warehouse 23 News: Heroes Unlimited Just Got More Unlimited
The Heroes Unlimited GM's Guide, Century Station, and Gramercy Island expand the Heroes Unlimited universe even further.
With the SJ Games office closed and most folks on holiday vacation, a few of us I.T. drones will be taking advantage of the slow weekend by getting some much-needed work done without disturbing anyone in the office, or vice-versa. In particular, we will be making some upgrades to the SJ Games web server this weekend. We expect to be down for about two hours starting at 11 p.m. Saturday night, but our work will continue throughout the weekend, so if you experience any connection problems, please check back. The outage will affect all of sjgames.com, including the Pyramid and JTAS webzines, as well as Warehouse 23.

Monday night we had the pleasure of hosting Randy Milholland of Something Positive. He and I and the Warehouse 23 staff all went out and ate good Mexican, and then came back and tried a couple of games of Star Munchkin 2 - The Clown Wars. (I won one, Cyndy won the other. I would have swept the series had Michelle not sicced Frank the Tank on me.)
We also did a little bit of scheming. Expect some new, different, and really twisted Something Positive products here soon. And the newest T-shirt, Nailed, is here NOW.

Shane Messer thought that the search for Iraq's weapons of mass destruction was something like a game. So he created a game that anyone can play . . . well, anyone with $39.99.
In Find Those Weapons: The Hunt for the Real WMD, the clues are real government documents related to the allied invasion of Iraq. The prize is a 14K gold trophy, a barrel of oil, and cash representing 10% of the game's profits. But if nobody finds it by Election Day, Messer will send the gold and oil to the White House.

I'm a child of the digital age with a taste and talent for orchestral music, so I take a great deal of enjoyment in the rare areas in which they overlap. I recently came across Yamaha's Silent Strings collection (yes, that's the Japan site; the U.S. one is annoying). Electric instruments are nothing new, of course, but the field is dominated by guitars and keyboards. Orchestral strings are much less common, especially in the variability, quality, and availability offered by Yamaha: four violins, a viola, three cellos, and a bass, plus specially designed bows, cases, and an amp.
The best of the lot are the SVC-200, the high-end cello model which folds down to fit in a 51.5"x8.75"x9.5" soft-side case, and the EV-205, which is the only 5-string violin I've ever seen.
The range of music that could be created by a Silent Strings instrument, much less a full quartet, is breathtaking. Everything from traditional chamber music to modern electronica, in the same song even. Add the ability to play in silent mode (with headphones on), run an audio-out to a computer, add an effects pedal, and that the cello will actually fit in the back seat of my car . . . anybody know a cello teacher in Austin with the Unfazable advantage?

Here are the Steve Jackson Games March 2004 releases:
Knightmare Chess
(Reprint)
Chess will never be the same! Knightmare Chess is chess
played with cards - and what cards! Each card breaks the rules in a wild
and unpredictable way, giving the game more twists and turns than a roller
coaster. A translation of the popular French game Tempete sur
l'Echequier by Pierre Clequin and Bruno Faidutti,
Knightmare Chess has 80 big, beautiful cards - each with an
individual color painting by
Brazilian artist Rogerio Vilela.
Some Knightmare Chess cards affect a single move, while some
change the entire game! Each card is assigned a point value, so you can
build custom decks based on an agreed point total, or handicap the match
so the better player has fewer powerful cards. The possibilities are
endless - and so is the fun!
80 oversized (4-1/2" x 2-1/2") cards and a rulesheet in a 8" x 4-7/8" x 1/2" box.
Stock #1321,
ISBN 1-55634-332-9.
$16.95.
Star Munchkin 2 - The Clown Wars
The Munchkins take to the stars -- again!
Star Munchkin 2 brings the epic saga of The Clown Wars to life, except with better acting . . . Star Munchkin took the rules-bending, power-gaming, dungeon-crawling insanity of the original Munchkin and put the whole thing in space, where the monsters are more alien, the weapons more zappy, and the treasure -- well, there's still piles of treasure.
Strap on the Sprayser or the new X-Rayser and go ray-gunning for new monsters like the Nerds of Prey! Play a new race (the Bugs) or class (Space Ranger!), and do it all with Ralph, the Wonder Dog by your side. Star Munchkin 2 - The Clown Wars also has a new card type: Rooms. Just open the door, and . . . "oh, noooooooooo . . .!"
Star Munchkin 2 - The Clown Wars is a supplement to Star Munchkin; you will need the original game to play. Or you could add it to a game of Munchkin or Munchkin Fu instead, or mix them all together for a Munchkin-fest of truly mind-bending proportions!
112 cards and rules sheet in shrink-wrapped folder.
Stock #1418,
ISBN 1-55634-724-3.
$16.95.
GURPS Vorkosigan
From the award-winning science fiction stories of Lois McMaster Bujold comes this worldbook . . . set in a future universe of honor and betrayal, war and intrigue, great victories and great defeats. Miles Vorkosigan is brilliant, charismatic, the heir to a noble house on a warrior planet . . . and hopelessly crippled.
No. Not hopelessly. A Vorkosigan never gives up. And when the fragile, dwarfed, odd-looking Miles charges headlong against the universe . . . Miles may break, but he's used to breaking. And he'll pay that price, for his Emperor's honor and his own, because when Miles hits it hard enough, the universe gives way.
Now you can enter the world of Miles Vorkosigan. Play his soldiers, his agents, his comrades. Play Miles himself, if you're up to the challenge . . . and if you think you can dare as much, and talk as fast, as the "little Admiral."

It was just a few months ago that astronomers were all excited about getting a closer look at Mars, which came closer to Earth than it had been in tens of thousands of years. Another chance comes up at the end of the month when Saturn comes as close to Earth as it ever gets, a once-every-29-years opportunity.
The people at Science@Nasa have the story, including some information on the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft that will arrive in Saturn's neighborhood next summer and stick around for four years, studying the planet and its many moons.
While Cassini-Huygens might make the information totally obsolete next year, you can find out what science thinks about Saturn and its moons right now in the pages of Transhuman Space: Deep Beyond, and then start roleplaying there.

The fine folks at OgreCave have renewed their Christmas tradition of suggesting a dozen great gamer gift ideas in a variety of price ranges.
In their list of Stocking Stuffers -- 12 games for $20 or less -- they give some love to Cheapass Games' Ogre Diceland, as well as 11 other great games.
In their second list for Games Under the Tree -- $40 or less -- they are kind enough to mention Strange Synergy and GURPS WWII: Weird War II. Thanks for the nod, OgreCave!
Their last two lists, covering d20 games and a mystery category, haven't been posted yet. But you can always cruise by the site and look for updates.
With four sturdy panels on one side and all the charts and tables you need to play the game on the other, the Modern GM Screen is perfect for any d20 GM. And for the players, the Modern Player's Companion provides expanded options for creating, developing, and equipping characters.
The Day of the Ninja went perfectly here at Steve Jackson Games. All of the hordes of ninja that descended upon the building to participate in the celebration were appropriately ninja-like and stealthy, resulting in a total of zero ninja sightings througout the day. A wild success! We can only hope that the Day of the Ninja next year will go so well.
While our backs were turned (and aided by the strategic application of invisible smoke bombs), the ninja dropped off several mysterious boxes in the warehouse. We lost our designated Mysterious Box Opener to the second set of traps (pity that Harold's replacement didn't live up to expectations; he should have been more honest about his poison-needle-trap-detection skills on his resumé) but eventually got down to the contents. And the ninja left us . . . T-shirts!
Yes, we found this a bit surprising too. Apparently they're trying to encourage more orders from their fast food delivery service.
Now you, too, can support your local ninja; we have the stealthy gray Guaranteed Delivery T-Shirt and the ninja black Dim-Mak Death Touch T-Shirt, guaranteed to not come covered in a box full of deadly traps. Ninja not included.

I'm going to try and coordinate the efforts of the thousands of Ninja Burger fans, my friends, and maybe some of my enemies, to make Friday, December 5th the Day of the Ninja. Why that Friday? Because it's opening day for the new Tom Cruise movie, The Last Samurai, and everyone knows that ninja will be celebrating the fact that there's only one last samurai left to do away with. And it's Tom Cruise, at that.
Stupid Gaijin.
Anyway, that's The Word from Ninja Burger Central. So on Friday we'll certainly be doing what we can to make people ninja conscious, to the extent that we can do so without being arrested for Lurking with Dubious Intent.
PS: Ninja Burger shirts are at the printer and will soon be in Warehouse 23!

We have now finished migrating them back to a mailman server on our own network, largely due to complaints about the spam Yahoo! added to messages. "We know you told us not to send you e-mail, but we're changing our system, so now you'll get LOTS and LOTS of e-mail about our services unless you opt out AGAIN. Letters and phone calls, too! Whoopee!
So I used my Yahoo! login, for the first time in months, and found their opt-out page. I had to click FIFTEEN TIMES to opt out of physical junk mail, phone calls (!!), and 13 categories of e-mail spam.
No THANK you, Yahoo!.
