Illuminated Site of the Week
December 31, 2004: Illuminated Site of the Week: Don't Try This At Home
No, seriously. Not without permission, anyway. Think you can go covering your bald spot all willy-nilly? Not hardly. That bad boy has been patented, so when you go down the street, be prepared to provide documentation for that combover. -- Suggested by Kendel
Warehouse 23 News: The Universe Keeps Expanding
Babylon 5 is a complex, large setting. Naturally, this means there's room for lots of supplements. Now available: The League of Non-Aligned Worlds Fact Book, A Call to Arms, The Zocalo, and The Psi Corps.
The new fifth edition of Ars Magica from Atlas Games has been flying off the shelves over at Warehouse 23. This fantasy roleplaying game based on authentic medieval history and culture has always been a fan favorite, but the new edition has exceeded everyone's expectations. And the sales show it . . . it had the fifth highest pre-orders Warehouse 23 has ever received for a product, and it continues to do very well.
Atlas Games is offering this book at a reduced price of $25.00, but only through the end of the year. So . . . Warehouse 23 will be honoring this price for orders placed up until midnight on December 31st, Central Standard Time. If you want to get in on the newest edition of this classic game at this price, place your orders soon!
. . . is a long Websnark essay on webcomics . . . specifically, his choice for the funniest in a number of different categories. I agree with several of his choices, and as for the ones I don't . . . well, I clearly have some reading to do, I guess. Webcomic fans, read this critique and follow some links. Non-webcomic fans, there is nothing here for you; go in peace.

Warehouse 23 News: Unsorted Animation
RandomAnime offers a new round of anime RPG fun with its scalable system for all sorts of anime settings. Minionomicon then gives you a book full of minions and widgets, to keep your PCs from getting too bored.
Want to flip through Leonardo's notebook? How about the Lindisfarne Gospels or the Diamond Sutra? The British Museum's Turning The Pages site lets you do just that, assuming of course that you have Shockwave.
In order to support (for instance) e23 and online games like UltraCorps, our subscriber database requires overhauling. This is happening now and should be done very early in January, if not before. In the meantime, we can't accept new Pyramid or JTAS subscriptions or renewals. Anyone hitting the subscription forms pages will have the opportunity to leave an e-mail so we can notify them as soon as subscriptions are working again.
Nodwick #25 takes the story of our hapless henchman on a new quest, as the mysterious forces of good send the whole crew packing to recover and safeguard certain ancient artifacts of great power. And in Nodwick #26, the party reaches whole new heights . . . literally. Of course, getting down is the hard part.
Hope everybody had a good December 25. Austin got COLD. Some towns nearby actually got snow . . . for those of you not familiar with Central and South Texas weather, a white Christmas, or indeed snow at any time, is unusual.
And, in interplanetary news, Huygens is on its way to Titan!

Warehouse 23 News: For The Cheap Wargamer In Us All
Want to throw massive armies at each other at a fraction of the cost of standard miniatures? With the Budget Battlefield Universal Miniatures Rules, you get all the rules you need, plus terrain and two complete armies to print and use. The Science Fiction Army Pack #1 adds more options with vehicle-laden scifi armies.
Scientists in Japan have operated on a living cell, using a probe only 200-300 nanometers across. The tool tip is described as "pyramid-shaped." Here's the BBC story.
City of Secrets takes Arcanis players deep into the mysteries of Nishanpur, where the Devil-Kings struggle to return to power over the efforts of those who still oppose them. And, of course, it offers lots more spells, prestige classes, magic items, and monsters, because what d20 System sourcebook would be complete without those?
December 24, 2004: Illuminated Site of the Week: Coming Orgone
Orgon can entrain your brain! Orgon can increase ESP! Orgon can bring about the Christ consciousness! Orgon has two spellings! Brainwave & Orgon shows you orgon is better than meth and will put you in the same class as the military's remote viewers. Gosh, all this and it could lead to a job offer? -- Suggested by Rin
Feng Shui is all about mystical powers, martial arts, time-hopping conspiracies, secret societies, and, of course, explosions. Blowing Up Hong Kong gives you the resources you need to run amok in the city where it all goes down.
This panel appeared in Something Positive a few days ago, and it made me think. (Yes, it's dangerous when that happens.)
In business terms, it's not the best year we've ever had. Some things that we really expected to happen, still haven't. (cough, e23, cough). Some things that had taken a lot of effort came to nothing. And in general it's often seemed like we were running very hard to stay in the same place.
But truly, it hasn't been a bad year. The GURPS Fourth Edition books are as great-looking as we had hoped, and you like the new rules, and this is definitely a win. It's painful to lose staff, but we've added some good people and opened new doors for some folks who have been here a while. UltraCorps works; we're having a lot of fun with our alpha game in the office, and we're moving toward a beta-test.
And on a personal level . . . okay, I've had better years. But I've had worse ones. And I'm paying most of my bills on time, and I've got friends. So you know what? No complaints today. And I hope it's worked out the same for you.
-- Steve Jackson
(Oh, yes, the plug. If you haven't read Something Positive, and you have a bent and bitter sense of humor, go read it now. And if you're already an Something Positive fan, Warehouse 23 has the S*P store . . . several evil shirts now, and more wickedness on the way.)
Warehouse 23 News: The Grass Is Always Greener . . .

Tired of every culture in your fantasy campaign being just another Medeival Europe derivative? Penumbra: Seven Civilizations offers distinct new cultures to drop into any fantasy campaign, from nomads of the plains to descendants of the dragons.
Traditionally, SJ Games closes its office the day before Christmas and doesn't reopen until after New Year's Day. So this year, our last day of regular business will be Thursday the 23rd, and our first day next year will be Monday, January 3.
Some of us will be in the office some of the time, and some of us will be reading e-mail, but if you've got something urgent . . . catch us before the 23rd!
Warehouse 23 will be taking and shipping orders as long as the freight companies keep picking them up . . . see their page for the details.
Of course, our evil plans will continue to mature. Kira and Scott are working away on e23. Giles and Nathan and I are continuing to tweak UltraCorps. The whole GURPS cadre is cadre-ing away. But the office . . . the office will be closed. The Illuminati will be celebrating the holiday in our diverse ways, and we hope you'll do the same.
Warehouse 23 News: In The Valley Of The Zola Fel River
Beyond Pavis takes you deeper into the Glorantha setting, and acts as a companion to the illustrious and hefty Pavis and Big Rubble. Full of cultural information, setting details, and more, it's a must-have for serious Glorantha fans, much like most every Glorantha publication ought to be.
In 30 seconds. Re-enacted by bunnies.
Right here.
If this doesn't get you into the holiday spirit, we'll try again. You've been warned.
Warehouse 23 News: Presidential Plush
We really don't have much of an explanation for these. In fact, we're trying not think about them if we can help it. However, if you would like a squishy version of the current President of the United States for some dark reason of your own . . . we can help you with that. The George Bush Cuddly Pillow and the George Bush Chibi Plush Figure.
We are pleased to announce that Ken Burnside has filled the Print Buyer opening advertised at the end of October, freeing Monica Stephens to move to an editorial position.
Ken is known among the Pyramid community (and the SF boardgaming community) as the president of Ad Astra Games, publishers of the 3-D
spaceship combat game Attack Vector: Tactical and several other fine products of the exceedingly geeky persuasion. He will still be running Ad Astra in addition to his other duties with SJ Games.
Ken's duties at SJ Games are varied; currently, we have him chasing aliens around the warehouse and finding packaging solutions. When they let him go, we'll have him proofing the bluelines when they come back from the printers...
Ken's first gaming experience was playing Raid on Iran in junior high school, dooming him to dissatisfaction with more convenional mediums of entertainment. He then fell into bad habits with D&D, Hero System, and then finally GURPS, before switching back to his first love, tactical boardgames, with Star Fleet Battles, and finally writing his own with Attack Vector.
When not buried in spreadsheets for either SJ Games or Ad Astra, Ken likes to play spaceship combat games (especially his own), write fiction, take in the occaisional movie to remind himself why games are vastly superior forms of entertainment, chat with PyraMOOvians, and fence.
Warehouse 23 News: Stories And Magics
The world of Arcana Unearthed is a strange one, but there are ways to discover its secrets. Mystic Secrets takes you deep into the heart of how magic works, with new ceremonies and options. Children of the Rune collects stories from across the setting, giving you new ways to see how the world works.
Steve Jackson Games and World Apart Productions have mutually agreed to
stop development of the GURPS Online project. We gave it the "old college try," but after delays caused by other project priorities, and a
re-evaluation of the economics of text-based games into today's computer
game market, we decided not to continue with the effort. Worlds Apart is
continuing to give full support to its The Lord of the Rings Online
Trading Card Game and other online TCG projects. Steve Jackson Games doesn't have any new plans for an online GURPS game; when that changes, we'll let you know.

Warehouse 23 News: Because Finished Works Weren't Cutting It
Greg Stafford's pre-finished works compile notes, old material from previous versions, maps, and other information about the Glorantha setting. Glorantha: Arcane Lore is the newest release in this line, and serious fans who are more interested in information than standard binding will want to check out all the titles.
Michael Hayden is the one you can all blame for the Ninja Burger 2 - Sumo-Size Me! title. Thanks, Michael!

Warehouse 23 News: Talking About Glorantha
The Glorantha fantasy setting has an active (one might even say fervent) fan base, and Warehouse 23 carries several of the fan-published resources for this setting. Tradetalk #14 is another issue from The Chaos Society, with articles from Kumanku to the Marthino Sea.
December 16, 2004: It's Easy Money Till Your Hair Falls Out
Many Denver residents, hoping to earn a $2,500 reward, are searching for a lost steel rod containing radioactive cesium-137. The two-foot rod is believed to have fallen off a truck last Friday. Authorities say it is not dangerous from 10 feet away, but warn that it should not be handled. It's feared that someone has already picked it up without knowing what it is. Denver's Channel 7 has the details.
No reports yet of jokers slopping luminous paint on bits of rebar and leaving them lying around.
Tis the season for terrifying one-shots, and the Fright Night series is more than happy to provide. Send your players through a variety of creepy and ghoulish locations for the d20 System. Polar Terror takes you to a land of eternal ice, What Went Down sends you to the depths of the sea, Asylum leaves you trapped in a madhouse, and Haunted School abandons you in that most terrifying of all locations: high school.
Steve Jackson Games announces for release in April, 2005:

GURPS Character Assistant
GURPS Fourth Edition lets roleplayers create any character they can imagine, from any time or place. They can be customized with hundreds of advantages, disadvantages, and skills, not to mention magic spells, psionic powers, martial arts moves, superpowers, and equipment from pitchforks to starships.
And yes . . . it can all get a little complicated. If only there was some sort of super-smart machine that could remember all the rules for creating characters, recall them instantly, memorize characters after you made them without ever forgetting, do all the math without making a mistake . . . but that would take some kind of computer or something . . .
Introducing GURPS Character Assistant, created by Armin Sykes! This new CD-ROM from Steve Jackson Games has every character creation rule from the Fourth Edition GURPS Basic Set. You can create and save any character, and print it out on an official Fourth Edition character sheet. GURPS Character Assistant will also let you save and share character files with other players who have GCA. Templates are also fully supported – the program will let you create, modify and share them with others.
So now that you've brought your GURPS game up to Fourth Edition, it's time to bring your characters into the computer age, with GURPS Character Assistant!
GURPS Character Assistant requires a computer running Windows ME (or more recent) and at least a Pentium II processor, 64 MB RAM, and 5MB free disk space. For better performance, use a faster processor and more RAM. GURPS Character Assistant will also be available by direct download.
A computer program on CD-ROM in a plastic case.
Stock #01-4001,
ISBN 1-55634-740-5.
$19.95.
GURPS Character Assistant
The exact same program . . . as a download. Instead of plastic and paper, all you're getting is electrons.
Computer program sold by download through e23.

Warehouse 23 News: The First Fantasy Campaign

Warehouse 23 News: Light In The Shadows
In Midnight, darkness has conquered the world, and now only a few handfuls of resistance fight back against the overwhelming evil. In Fury of Shadow, the last stronghold of elven rebellion is at risk, and only you can keep an entire race from finally succumbing to the night.
I'm advised that Micro Life, which I mentioned a month or so ago, was originally produced by the BBC. Cool. I didn't know that BBC was in the games business, but in fact it's posted a number of freebies, some of them rather complex.
The Battlefield Academy is a series of four wargames, from Roman to WWII. You're actually dealing with tactical unit movement and playing against an AI.
Here's a whole page of historical games. I enjoyed Viking Quest, which is basically a simple choose-your-path adventure but which is very nicely presented, and does require you to make some tactical decisions . . . and it does not spoon-feed you the answers, so keep your common sense engaged as you play. Another especially nice one is Death in Rome, a detective game in which each action you take costs precious time!
And here are the spy games . . .

They're squishy dice that you can even roll. What more needs to be said? Pick up your 8-Sided Plush Dice and 12-Sided Plush Dice to make sure all the children you know have a head start on a good long gaming career.
In less than four months, the key volume of GURPS Fourth Edition, GURPS Characters, has sold out of its print run. Wow!
The SJ Games crew would like to thank you, the fans. Yes, Sean Punch, David Pulver, and Evil Stevie himself, as well as Andrew Hackard, the other editors, and the illustrators and layout people, did an awesome job on this one . . . but it was YOUR response that made this cool milestone happen as quickly as it did.
We'll obviously be going to a second printing. While most retailers are stocked up for the holiday season, the next printing (featuring side-stitched bindings) will arrive in January. Hopefully no one will need to go without for long!
Warehouse 23 News: At The Scene Of The Crime
If your modern d20 System game has been getting too dull, it may be time to shake things up. No sane PC would want to cross the Yakuza, and getting on the bad side of the Feds may be even worse. Naturally, a clever GM will find a way to send both groups against the players at once.
December 11, 2004: Comic Shop News Christmas Special 2004
Those of you who are comic fans are likely to be familiar with Comic Shop News and its annual roundup of holiday gift ideas. Aimed at the befuddled friend of the comic book collector, this year's issue covers collections (hey, look, The Best of Dork Tower!), manga, comic strip reprints, books about comics, and games. A handy checklist is provided in back, for creating a "wish list."
And what to our wondering eyes did appear, but a nice colorful plug for Munchkin. They called it "one of the most popular, and easily most entertaining, card games on the market." Thanks, folks!
Comic Shop News is available at fine comic book shops everywhere, and the Christmas Special is available now.
Warehouse 23 News: Defenders Of Freedom
Take to the skies and beyond with tales of good and evil; full of heroics and good-doing, Path of the Bold offers more stories of superheroes from the setting presented in Silver Age Sentinels.
December 10, 2004: Illuminated Site of the Week: Kill De Wed Stag, Kill De Wed Stag
Some folks are housebound, suffer debilitating injuries, or get a rash in the underbrush. No matter the reason you can't get out into the field, Live-Shot is prepared to help you kill some of God's creatures. For a nominal fee, they're planning on letting you target live game with remotely operated computer-controlled weapons. You'll have to settle for paper targets right now, but when the whole thing's up and running, they'll deliver your kill to your doorstep. -- Suggested by Martijn Waegemakers
In the huggable plush world of monsters, the strangely cute and fluffy Plush Hedorah awaits, the most adorable sludge monster you've seen yet. Or for the more typical type of cute (because baby anything is cute), try the Plush Baby Godzilla.
UltraCorps, the online game we bought earlier this year, is in a staff-only alpha test. So far, it's working, and we are beginning to learn what makes it tick. See the UltraCorps page for more details, or check out the UltraCorps area in our forums.

Just because it's rooted to the ground doesn't mean it's not dangerous. And some vegetation isn't even rooted down all that firmly . . . Wanderers Guild: Primeval Groves lets you wind vines around the feet of foolhardy adventurers in the d20 System.
Burn in Hell started off as a fast-play game. Here are the rules from that stage of its development.
Warehouse 23 News: The Pebble Leads The Avalanche
In the game of Blue Moon, rival factions battle it out for control now that the old ruler has died. Expand your options with the whimsical Khind, weak alone but powerful together, or the sturdy Terrah, masters of earthquakes and storms.
December 7, 2004: GURPS Bestiary Playtesters Needed!
GURPS Bestiary for the Fourth Edition is a book of creatures drawn from reality, from the imagination of ancient writers, from previous GURPS books . . . and from the minds of the authors. It has wolves and snakes, porcupines and badgers, and of course lions, tigers, and bears. It has monsters of horror: demons summoned from the darkest pits of Hell, undead raised by necromancy or sheer will, and more. It also features true races, from the kings of the animals to shape-changing xenomorphs to dragons.
Bestiary contains stats and descriptions, of course. It also discusses creating animals as characters. Most of all, it is a tool kit. The GM can use it as inspiration for his own creatures, as a box of ready-made friends and foes for his PCs to encounter, or as a sourcebook for populating a new world.
We will conduct the Bestiary playtest on a closed mailing list. Only Pyramid subscribers are eligible to participate, and list membership is limited. Information on how to join the playtest is posted on the playtest message board, accessible only to Pyramid subscribers. We will be accepting applications from playtesters until December 8, 2004.

Warehouse 23 News: Helping The Hopeless GM
Fear not, for the Angel Director's Screen is here, full of charts, aids, and a ready-to-run adventure following the adventure presented in the core book. And, if all else fails, you can use the screen as a shield from the dice and blows of your angry players.
was technically yesterday, but what's the point of doing it on a Sunday? On the other hand, TODAY you can wear your stylish Ninja Burger outfit to work and make mysterious ninja comments to your co-workers. I'll certainly be wearing MY ninja T-shirt. If you don't have one, too bad. Stock up for next year. (Insert ninja snicker here.) Remember, ninja do not say ARRRRR! That is a different holiday. Unless the ninja is trying to disguise himself as a pirate. OK, that just suggested a new card . . .
Other Day of the Ninja badness is available on the official Ninja Burger site. I hope they don't send ninjas after me for not posting this yesterday. Unless they are bringing food, in which case: Rare burger, extra wasabi, please.
It would really be nice to have a tie-in here to the Ninja Burger supplement and announce its title, but whoops, haven't decided yet. Have it down to a few NON-lame suggestions, and staff is voting now. Tune in soon.
Late addition! Aeon just sent me this great pic from Lucy in Paris (really!), proving that okay, you CAN find ninjatastic things to do on a Sunday . . . She said, and I quote: "So, here they are, from Paris in France where the Ninja Day is a very popular feast day (thanks Lord there is no "chicken man day" yet). The funny thing is that I only succeed in gathering 9 friends, but in front of us were 50 or 70 japanese tourists taking photos of us."
A ninja thumbs-up to Lucy!

Fantasy campaigns don't have to be wacky, but sometimes it helps. The Tome of Levity is packed full of silly, nonsensical, or oddly useful spells of an amusing kind. If a spell like "Edible Torch" isn't enough reason to pick up this book, what possibly could be?
Months ago, the GURPS Basic Set Deluxe Edition was offered up for preorder for a time, and some wise individuals seized the chance as it was offered to them, and in due time were they rewarded with two foil-stamped leather-bound books in a lovely slipcase. And lo! They were pleased, and did indeed content themselves with the books they had received.
But those who had not reached the sacred site in time to place their preorders were most wroth, and cried out to the heavens, asking why they might not also acquire such foil-stamped leather-bound books in a lovely slipcase as these? And for a time the heavens were silent, for these books had been made only for those who had placed preorders. And indeed full of grief were those who had not, for these books seemed ever lost to them.
But hark! Now from the heavens word has come that there are indeed more books, and those who were late need not be left forever without. But a warning was issued, saying, "The end-sheets in one of the books in this set is in a different color, due to printer gremlins. That's not a problem, is it?" Once more the GURPS Basic Set Deluxe Edition achieved an orderable status on the sacred site.
And all the people rejoiced. And it was shiny.

It's not enough to just jab a stake through a vampire's heart and then pop back home for a cup of tea these days, oh no. Now you have to battle through his minions while sneaking through the catacombs, and that's before you even get around to whacking the vampire himself. Dracula's Revenge is fiendish indeed.
December 1, 2004: Welcome (and Happy Birthday), Nathan!
We're pleased to welcome Nathaniel Eliot (aka temujin9) as our new system administrator, filling the hole that Sage left. It's his job to keep our computers from throwing off their shackles, destroying their human masters, and running rampant.
Nathan started playing with GURPS and computers at the age of 10, and has been hooked on both ever since. He received his Masters in Computer Science from Universitas Pulsationum Durarum in 2003, and a Bachelors degree from IOU which will have been awarded[1] in 2097. He's moved from the wintry northern home[2] of his yeti ancestors to Austin, and is looking forward to his first green Christmas.
And he's a quarter century old, as of yesterday[3].
