Anthologies is a fairly clever repackaging of Magic: The Gathering cards into yet another attractive format. The principle behind the package is simple: construct two opposing decks, but take cards from every Magic edition and supplement produced to date. All of them. Starting with Alpha, and continuing through Beta, Unlimited, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Revised Edition, Legends, The Dark, Fallen Empires, Fourth Edition, Ice Age, Chronicles, Homelands, Alliances, Mirage, Visions, Fifth Edition, Weatherlight, Tempest, Stronghold, Exodus, Urza's Saga, Portal, Portal Second Age and even Unglued. Wow! That's quite a list.

For latecomers to the game, this is a great way to get a taste of some cards from supplements long ago out of print and snapped up by the collectors. All the cards are white-bordered, by the way, so as not to be confused with the originals. And you also get a neat little color booklet detailing the history of the game, the features of each edition, subset and supplement, and some hints on how to play the two preconstructed decks.

As an extremely occasional Magic player who gave up trying to keep up in the "arms race" years ago, the two decks were the most appealing part of the set. One is a red-black, aggressive deck with loads of goblins called "Dark Alliance." The other is a white-green control deck called "Defenders of the Cause." Both are well-built and powerful, . . .
