Eye of the Wyvern is part of a new series of Dungeons & Dragons adventures that TSR bills as a "Fast-Play Game." That means its easy to set up, easy to run, and easy to play -- even if you've never played D&D or any other roleplaying game before.

Written by TSR old-timer Jeff Grubb (hey, he was a vet at the TSR offices when I got there 12 years ago -- besides, it's a term of affection and respect), Eye of the Wyvern is a wilderness adventure with enough hooks to keep players interested, but is otherwise straightforward and to the point -- exactly what this kind of product needs to be.

Like TSR's other Fast-Play product, Wrath of the Minotaur, this adventure begins with a very brief introduction to the game system. After the obligatory "What is Roleplaying?" section, the basic D&D concepts of character stats, character class, and race are introduced. In the introductory adventure, a three-room dungeon crawl called "The Ruined Tower," pre-generated characters are used. To keep things simple, there are two fighters, a thief and a wizard, all 2nd level. The intro adventure pits the characters against some giant rats and a few undead, culminating with a nasty ghoul. This adventure doesn't bother to teach the combat rules, instead just giving the reader the "to hit" numbers for each encounter. There's a little treasure to be had, and a few experience points to be divvied up. Putting myself in the mind-set . . .
