July 6, 2005: Girl Genius Online

Yesterday I mentioned a Mad Science webcomic that I may have mentioned a couple of times before. Today I want to point you to a Mad Science webcomic that I have NOT mentioned before . . . not in that context.

Girl Genius, by Phil and Kaja Foglio, has been around for a while as a print comic. It spawned a great little card game by James Ernest, and yes, a GURPS version is in the works. But the original comic will exist no more, except in trade paperback collections, because the Foglios took it online.

This is somewhat the reverse of the normal pattern . . . many comics start out online and their makers consider print to be something of a Holy Grail. But it doesn't have to work that way. So it is with Girl Genius . . . the Foglios are now bypassing pulp for the original appearance of each strip, and going straight to electrons. A full-color page of Girl Genius is posted every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And you should read it. Great art, wonderful coloring, intelligent dialog, humor, tragedy, humorous tragedy, characters, plot . . . and MAD SCIENCE!

It's located at www.girlgeniusonline.com. Pass that URL around.
