July 27, 2026: Fighting Fantasy . . . Miniatures?

Remember the old Fighting Fantasy gamebooks? I certainly hope so – SJ Games is well into a 50-book republication deal that will bring this classic "theater of the mind" series back to shelves in the USA. But there's more. The stories we've been enjoying for nearly half a century now have miniatures. And what awesome miniatures they are!

Created by Blue Giant, they're crowdfunding now on Backerkit. I pledged before I even started writing this – they're that good. They're extremely detailed, and the art brings me back to when I was younger. It's the style I used to save my pennies for, and I can't wait to get my brush on Urzle Ironface, Klash, and Throom in particular. And the Flying Fish, because they're just cool.

Even better, for those who don't have 3D printers (a deficiency which, in my professional capacity, I think should be remedied immediately!), they're offering professionally printed versions: the full set of physical miniatures, which work out to the general range of $5 each, and a lot nicer than what we would have paid $1.22 for in lead in 1980 (my benchmark date for minis). I, of course, have a 3D printer (quite a few of them, actually; I don't really need a kitchen table, right?), but if I didn't, I'd be buying the printed ones. They're that good.

They'll be good for many things besides Fighting Fantasy, of course. They'll slot right into any old-school or OSR game. They'll be great for The Fantasy Trip. I highly recommend them for anyone with a physical TFT game. And they'll make a nice display.

P.S. from Steve: Jean is our 3D Printing Czar, and when this news came in, I asked her to turn it into an Illuminator post just out of courtesy to a fellow Fighting Fantasy licensee. But it turns out she was genuinely blown away by their quality. Congratulations, Blue Giant. Jean is very picky!
